The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

WikiLeaks document says al-Qaida double agent misled CSIS

Secret U.S. military documents suggest a Guantanamo Bay detainee with links to al-Qaida duped Canadian intelligence officials who recruited him as an agent.

The allegation is found among some 700 classified documents released by online whistleblower WikiLeaks to select media outlets, including the New York Times. The documents, dating from 2002 to 2008, detail accounts of prisoners at the infamous U.S. military jail in Cuba.

The Times reports that one document says U.S. officials discovered a detainee who has been recruited by British and Canadian intelligence officials because of his "connections to members of various al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups."

However the report suggests the unnamed agent never shifted his militant loyalties.

According to the Times, the document says that after repeated interrogations, the Central Intelligence Agency concluded the man "withheld important information" from the British and Canadians and was found to be a threat.

The newspaper says the documents indicate the man was later sent back to his native country.

The collection of documents, which WikiLeaks is calling "The Guantanamo Files," is also said to contain information on the prison's remaining inmates, although there is no indication so far whether Canadian Omar Khadr, the last Westerner remaining in the prison, is included.

Khadr, who was 15 when he was captured in Afghanistan in 2002, is to be released from Guantanamo Bay later this year after pleading guilty to terrorist offences.
