The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Former MLA to make Saanich council announcement

Former New Democratic Party MLA David Cubberley appears set to jump back into municipal politics.

Cubberley, who was a Saanich councilor before serving one term as an MLA, "will be making an important announcement regarding the future of local government in Saanich" at noon on June 14, according to a media advisory released today.

In a blog posting he says, "Like many, I think there’s room for improvement on the big issues facing Saanich – like shaping growth, managing traffic impacts, improving walkability, and building rapid transit . . . I think it’s time for a change, because I’m certain we can do better."

In early May rumours were circulating that Cubberley was considering running to be mayor of Saanich, the largest municipality in the Capital Regional District. At the time Cubberley declined to confirm or deny, but did say, "Lots of people seem to want me to reinvolve myself municipally."

The incumbent mayor of Saanich is Frank Leonard, who has held the position since 1996 and is expected to run again. Leonard was first elected as a councilor in 1986.

Cubberley was a Saanich councilor from 1990 to 2002 and the MLA for Saanich South from 2005 to 2009.
