New Dome roof plans hit a snag

Negotiations with companies hoping to build the new retractable roof at B.C. Place Stadium are taking longer than expected.

But B.C. Pavilion Corporation CEO Warren Buckley said roof tendering has been delayed to September, but it won't impact the post-Olympic part of the $365 million project.

"The prices that were tendered were good for so many days and we asked them to extend it for 30 days as we continued to negotiate," Buckley said. "The construction schedule is still in place."

He said the process has been complicated by more than 40 bids submitted. Some companies are joint ventures offering a package of steel, cabling and fabric.

Meanwhile, Buckley said negotiations are underway with a preferred bidder for a long-term lease to develop land to the west of the stadium. Buckley said the offer was good but "reflective of a down market." He declined to name the company or discuss the offer.

"If you take it over time, it's certainly more than acceptable," he said.

    This project will die

Like all of Campbell`s other promises, this one will die too.

How will the goverment justify selling land around bc place to pay for a 365 million dollar doughnut hole in the bc place roof while the evergreen line gets cancelled?

    What's this BS?

" a preferred bidder"? Another one of Campbells cronies getting a contract? So maybe the bidder wants it for nothing and Campbells eyes are beginning to open. Smells like another BC Rail Giveaway to me.

    The mass-media is now

The mass-media is now telling us how expensive fighting forest fires are costing us but no criticism about a roof that'll cost us $365 million and only be opened a few days a year.

    One expensive "Tim-Bit"!

$365 million for a vinyl roof that probably won't last more than 25 years. Sounds like we are getting fleeced.

    Another of Gordos visions.

Another of Gordos visions. Heck its only tax payers money. But Gordo saw a few other places with retractable roofs so in his pea size brain it menas full speed ahead.

    yup

That place is a status symbol that the average citizen can hardly afford to patronize!
When the taxpayers begin to feel the heat of all these expenses, the culprit (Gordo) will be relaxing in Hawaii, enjoying a fantastic pension, and the NDP will be faced with the fallout!

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
