Attendance list shows pharmaceutical industry dominated government's drug policy chat

Friday's closed meeting on reordering British Columbia's drug approval process was only for “stakeholders”, the majority of whom are in the business of making or selling drugs.

A health ministry spokesperson provided a list of the organizations that were represented at the meeting. It shows 31 of the organizations were directly from the drug industry, seven were from pharmacies and two were from insurance companies. The rest of the attendees were from patient groups, the University of B.C., the B.C. Medical Association and the health ministry.

Media requests to attend the meeting were refused, as was that of NDP health critic Adrian Dix, who said ministry officials have promised to brief him later.

While the government's list of attendees did not name the individuals representing the various organizations, the Tyee obtained the complete list from another source. What follows is the list provided by the government, with the names of representatives added where possible:

    No surprise here

as more profit for private corps in the health sector are on the neo-con wish list. Looks like Gordo has sped up his selling out of BC before he gets the boot. Hope all you Liberal voters out there are saving all your money for future drug costs, which of course, will be more. Much much more.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
