The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Morton's new blog draws heavy traffic

Biologist Alexandra Morton, after years of studying first orcas and then salmon, has launched a new blog -- and drawn remarkable traffic right from the start.

Based in Sointula, on Malcolm Island, Morton has published numerous scientific papers and campaigned strongly against siting fish farms on wild salmon migration routes. Late in June, she called on the B.C. public to fight for wild salmon.

On Monday Morton launched a new blog dedicated to the science and politics of salmon farms. Word went out to some mail lists, and triggered a flood of traffic that any veteran blogger might envy.

In an email to The Tyee, Morton said she'd received hundreds of emails -- and in her first day online, she had 3,150 visitors.
