The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Tory bloggers react to coalition

Conservative bloggers are rallying to the defence of the Harper government, and using their sites to organize support.

Stephen Taylor, founder of Blogging Tories, has posted nonstop on the issue, including audio and transcripts of the NDP caucus conference call. He’s also created RallyforCanada.ca, announcing nationwide rallies for next Saturday. (Heads up: For Vancouver, it’s Robson Square, noon to 2:00.)

The Shotgun, politics blog of Western Standard.ca, has been equally energetic, with a string of posts. One poster has been critical of the government’s economic update as the trigger of the coalition, but most are attacking the coalition directly.

At Small Dead Animals, the latest post hints at a western backlash: “There’s talk of a Coalition West to fight off the eastern invaders.”

Climbing Out of the Dark, an Edmonton, blog, echoes the rumours: “This new, new coalition is the Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia Coalition ... better known as the BYAOS, or Bet Your A$$ On Solidarity.”

So does Darcey at Dust My Broom, who cites Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach as quoted in the Edmonton Sun: “We do have a strategy in place. ... I’m not going to play the cards until we know who we are dealing with. And what the issues are.”

The Conservatives’ website, meanwhile, is now rich in “Stand up for Canada” items, urging supporters to write letters, attend rallies, and call talk radio.
