Liberal on Dion: 'This guy is so different'

The media paints Stéphane Dion as a weak leader, but one of his British Columbia candidates says the Liberal leader is just misunderstood.

“I don't know why the press aren't talking about this,” said Briony Penn, the Liberal candidate for Saanich-Gulf Islands. “This guy is so different. His style of leadership is so different from anything anyone has ever seen in Canada and it's going by unnoticed.”

To make her point, she told the story of Dion arriving for a press conference in Victoria off a plane from Ottawa on the day the tapes were released of Robert Dziekanski dying after being tasered by police at Vancouver airport. Dion hadn't heard them, but Penn had while driving to the event.

He turned to her and said, “You tell the press, what was your reaction.”

That trust speaks volumes, she said. “What does that tell you about his leadership style? Would Stephen Harper have done that? Stephen Harper wouldn't have even done that to his minister. Stephen Harper would have had to sit and control every word that was said and would probably have said 'no comment'.”

The media needs to give Dion more credit for his leadership style, she said. “This is a guy that's collaborative and people are really underestimating the power of that kind of leadership.”

    Briony Penn

Well, if Ms Penn wants to really help Mr Dion, she should be telling her supporters to vote strategically on Oct 14 and not split the vote one more time so Gary Lunn can continue his little adventure in Ottawa with Pee Wee.

    You know ...........

............. if the media and neocons keep dumping on Dion I might hold my nose and, something I haven't done in 25 years, vote Liberal.

Really, who were the other two contenders for the leadership of the Libs., a hapless NDP loser of a Premier, riding on his brothers shirttails or an American loving guy whose name I can't spell.

As it stands, Tweedle Dumb (Dion) is a better choice than Tweedle Dee (Harpo) and no one is ever going to vote for Tweedle Dumbest or very few for the Blair Switch Project.

    Off the Throne

    About The Hook

The British Columbia legislature resumes sitting this week, but not before Premier Christy Clark outlined her spring agenda in an appearance on the Vancouver radio station where she used to work in what was pitched as a replacement for the throne speech. That agenda amounted to staying the course: focus on the economy, no money for teachers or anything else, and no higher taxes.

This from a premier who won the leadership of her party on a "change" platform. Perhaps appropriate then that the government didn't bother with a more formal speech from the throne at a time when polls suggest an increasing number of people are wondering if the premier's going to, as they say, piss or get off the pot.
