Vancouver councillor Geoff Meggs to seek NDP nomination

VANCOUVER -- A second civic politician in Vancouver is making a bid for a provincial NDP nomination.

Two-term city councillor Geoff Meggs has announced he will seek the NDP nomination in the Vancouver-Fairview riding, currently held by Liberal Margaret MacDiarmid.

Meggs won't be acclaimed in the riding because former BC Government and Service Employees Union president George Heyman is also seeking the nod.

The successful NDP candidate will be selected at a meeting on October 21.

Meggs' announcement comes just days after Park Board commissioner Constance Barnes confirmed she will run for the NDP nomination in Vancouver-False Creek, held by Liberal Mary McNeil.

Barnes made her announcement last weekend and revealed she will step down as Park Board chairwoman in order to focus on her bid, but Meggs says he will remain on council until he knows if he has won the right to represent New Democrats in next May's provincial election.
