There will be a secret ballot vote at the next British Columbia New Democratic Party convention in 2011 on whether or not to have a leadership convention, according to a motion that passed with broad support this morning.
Headed into the convention some said this was a housekeeping motion correcting an oversight, while others suggested it is laying the groundwork to replace leader Carole James.
James spoke in favour of the motion.
Also this morning Moe Sihota was elected president of the party and federal NDP leader Jack Layton delivered a speech that stressed the importance of fighting climate change, supporting education and defeating the HST.
Organizers announced there are 621 delegates at the convention, which is roughly the same as the 606 who attended the party's 2007 convention.
Andrew MacLeod is The Tyee’s Legislative Bureau Chief in Victoria. Reach him here.

So a selected group of folks
So a selected group of folks will secretly decide if a leadership review is in order. Not exactly a hurry up event folks.
I din't vote for her to even be my MLA and was pleased when, with redistribution she no longer represented the riding I am in.
Time to hit the road Ms. James, you have stayed too long and supported Gordo too often

go to where you are wanted Carol
If she likes to work with business people, maybe she should seek to replace Gordo when he gets kicked out?

Thanks Carole
Great work as the BCLibs' star Leader of the Opposition. You are so good for my team that we left our ace player at home, and told her to take some crew rest, especially as the BCNDP implode on themselves yet again.
Keep it up, BCNDP :-).

Glad to see you're proud of helping make kids live in poverty.
Four more years of Gordon and Mary and Kevin and Mike hurting people and you're all smiles.
Well done.

If she goes into the next election
If James is the leader of the NDP in 2013 then the NDP can kiss any chance of winning goodbye. Yet again. The Liberals will have a new leader in my opinion, probably Diane Watts, which will give British Columbians a good dose of amnesia regarding the hell they/we've lived through for 12 years of Campbell policies.
If the party and James cannot foresee this reality and bring in a new leader then they do not deserve to lead this Province.
