STV seeks 'someone who can make me feel real'

The listing can be found on Craigslist under miscellaneous romance.

The heading reads, “Single - Good listener - Looking for self actualisation.” And then:

Hi, I'm single. And I'm a transferable vote.

I'm modern, fair, responsive and accountable. I'm a good listener.

You can look at pictures of me here: www.stv.ca

I'm looking for someone who can make me feel real. Right now, I often feel like I'm only an idea. If you believe in me, and support me, I know I can come alive and make a difference in your life.

I'm new to Canada, but I'm friendly and I'm hoping I'll fit in here. I've made many friends in Australia, Ireland, Malta, Scotland, New Zealand, Cambridge & Minneapolis.

Your current partner probably doesn't listen to you or respond to your needs. But I will. I'll listen, I'll give you choices, and you'll get what you want.

Let's meet up. How about Tuesday May 12th?

I dunno.

I hear from others that you're complicated. High maintenance. Hard to understand. Obsessed with your Weighted Inclusive Gregory method. I also hear you've got a Droop quota! Finally, I've got to wonder, is STV communicable?

    BC-STV Responds to Possible Suitor

You gonna believe the explanation of my merits and demerits as given by those who claim to find me confusing, even baffling? Is that logical? Wouldn't you therefore expect them to provide a confused and baffling description of me, a distortion of who I truly am?

As for "complicated. High maintenance. Hard to understand. Obsessed with your Weighted Inclusive Gregory method [and the] Droop quota," I'm offering fair election results, more effective representation, accountability to communities, more responsive legislatures and greater stability.

Now if you prefer a partner who cheats the majority of voters, makes government unaccountable, favours parties over people and weakens our province, then go for it!

Me, I'm looking for partners open enough to give me a whirl for two or three elections. They don't like me after that? They can dump me!

    It's Sophisticated, not Confusing

Opponents of STV try to frighten the public with the idea that it is too complicated to be understood.

Try to think of an electoral system as a tool that will perform a job. Some tools are like hammers. Simple and effective, they are very good at driving nails. But there is more to building a foundation than driving nails into timber.

Now consider a power drill. It take a bit longer to learn than a hammer, what with its different sized bits and driver attachments, but in short order you can approach the task of joining those timbers with the kind of versatility that can best many design challenges.

Why listen to someone who tells you that you can't get the hang of it?

There must be a better way

There must be a better way than STV somewhere, to get us to shift from the present system used in this country. To suggest we should try STV for three elections just to see if we like it is a strange way to do things. I'm prepared to wait and vote under the present system. My gosh the also ran parties who really really want the change so they might somehow get somebody elected don't turn my crank. My gosh the Green leader is running in our new riding. Her ideas are all over the map. Her suggestion to legalize crack cocain is right up there in the realm of sheer stupidity. Should we jump to her ideas in desperation? I'm very content with my MLA in that riding and expect her to be back on the job next week in a new NDP government STV got big support last time because King Gordo , in a fit of anger by a lot of voters got to be the guy who managed to break all his election promises as quickly as possible, and the suckers figured he wsn't a liar.YOuget what you elect folks and STV isn't going to make it a better world. Watch out for what you wish for , as it usually jumps up and bites back . G wipe the floor with the Green leader. The LIberal candidate is basically unknown.

Maureen is our woman MLA and we want to keep her in the Legislature

    "YOuget what you elect folks"

Under FPTP this isn't true. Only a minority get the MLA they voted for.

DPL: "There must be a better

DPL: "There must be a better way than STV."

So you'll support the worst system, FPTP, than vote for BC-STV, a better system. And you'll do that in favour of, one day, some day, perhaps not even in your lifetime, getting a system that in your opinion is better?

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
