An NDP candidate in the B.C. election campaign has stepped down over racy photos that surfaced on the social networking site Facebook.
Ray Lam, the New Democrat candidate for Vancouver-False Creek, announced his decision Sunday night.
One of the photos showed Lam grabbing a woman's chest, while another depicted two people clutching at his underwear.
"An issue was made regarding inappropriate material on my private Facebook page,'' Lam said in an email statement.
"I regret this material and the associated comments that have now become public."
"I do not want this to be a distraction in the election campaign and have advised the party that I am stepping down,'' he said.
Lam apologized to B.C. NDP Leader Carole James and wished her party the best of luck in the coming election.
NDP President Jeff Fox said the party would nominate a new candidate in the next few days to run in the Vancouver-False Creek riding.
Lam's chief opponent, Liberal candidate Mary McNeil, said the entire debacle showed Lam's inexperience.
"It's not a matter of the fact that the photos were there. It's that voters hold you up to a certain standard and they should and I think sometimes if you do things like that, it's just not appropriate,'' she said.
"I think, quite frankly, they were just inexperienced and it shows a lack of judgment.''
When asked if she thought this might help her chances of winning the riding , McNeil said she doesn't think so.
"I still have an opponent out there,'' she said. "I'm just talking to folks in the riding. I think the big issues for them are the economy and crime and that's what I want to focus on.''
Sunny Dhillon reports for The Canadian Press.

Ah............Facebook.............
............does't anyone learn.
I have a facebook 'page', though I seldom look at it. All sorts of people who I never heard of want to be "my friend", though I'm decidedly unfriendly.
Any fool who posts anything other 'mom and apple pie' photos on Facebook, is certainly a fool who should not run for politics.
By the way, my facebook page as a lot of racy pictures of trams and steam locos (I guess politically incorrect in today's carbon tax era!).

who would want this job
Perfectly legal nude photos, intemperate remarks, to much partying twenty years ago, a teen romance gone bad - all fodder for the scum in our mainstream press. The remaining candidates are so boring they could sell their speeches as cures for insomniacs.

Close Your Eyes
And project yourself 25 years into the future:
What do you see? What!!?
BC is just another wasteland, another meaningless link in the neocon/Zionist chain.
Your child is condemned to a meaningless job for a meaningless wage just to survive.
All the really beautiful places are now private property and you can't go there. (Did someone murmur Howe Sound?)
There are immutable laws to prevent the poor speaking out against the rich.
The scarred and pitiless faces of the 'New Bureaucracy' watch your every move.
But what's that?
Over there, in a darkened corner, almost hidden from sight. It's a ... a picture! ... of somebody's rear end! And that caption underneath - what does it say?
Look! The letters are showing up! Right there beneath the fog of misery...
'Thanks for nothing, Mommy and Daddy. Why did you vote for the rich pricks?'
So my question to you is: Would your children vote for YOU after you squandered away THEIR right to a decent life and a supernatural environment which only exists here in the whole wide world?
Now open your eyes and take my advice: Vote NDP as a small step in the right direction. Sure, in time we will be able to do better; but the present alternative doesn't even bear contemplation.

Bur drunk driving is ok?
WTF.
Mary McNeil" "I think, quite frankly, they were just inexperienced and it shows a lack of judgment."
Could someone put a microphone in her face and ask what she thinks about her wannabe boss Gordon Campbell's drunk driving!
How are photos taken on a night out with friends resignable offenses but getting arrested and convicted for drunk driving is not?

I agree
The bar at present is set very, very low as long as Campbell is our premier. If drunk driving isn't enough to resign, than neither is a picture on facebook.

The guy was stupid. It wasnt
The guy was stupid. It wasnt a chest he was groping it was a breast.Often referred to as a TIT. That was his underwear hanging out. Cute for friends but not cute fot a candidate. Seems he was too dumn to ubderstand that opponents would check his site. All parties collect dummies and poor vetting ends up in the news. Has the spit hit the fan a few days later, the NDP wouldn't have a candidate in the riding. But let's not forget good old boy John Les, still running while under police investigation, or an ex police chief star candidate who resigned to keep from being investigated.
It hurts all parties when the voters get tired of seeing such clowns running. It certainly diverts the message the parties are trying to put in front of the voters. No wonder voting averages are going down. The clown may have thought his pictures would improve the youth vote, but more likely would have the youth shaking their heads at his dumb strategy . Let's move on to real issues.

silly secrets
I know of a few good people who were asked to run for office, but refused for much the same reasons.
Being alive and active is not a sin, but far too often an innocent happening can be misconstrued.
The question is if we really demand that our elected mambers never in their lives, stepped outside their designated roles and perhaps had some fun?
I believe that most "chests" were fondled from time to time, but apparantly it is not ok to admit to it?

Oh COME ON
Gordon Campbell's life is NEVER mentioned - and, if half the rumours (none of which have ever been denied) about his 'personal' life and affair(s) since he's been elected to various public offices are true then he's the one who should be embarrassed, not some dumb-ass kid who groped a girl while drunk at a party when he wasn't elected to anything.
The hypocrisy of this stuff is mind-bending.

I agree we will have to file
I agree we will have to file a grievance with elections BC over these Tamany Hall media assaults.
if harpo throws cash at the CTV and CanWest - two CPC mouthpieces then that should be considered election spending as should all anti-ndp drumbeat of the major media here in Van - CanWest and CKNW being particularly obvious.

Remember Dana Larsen?
The federal BC NDP candidate that was turfed in the last federal election?
Here's his take on the matter with some interesting insight:

How about some interesting insights into Gordon Campbell's PERSONAL LIFE?
This is the guy who thinks drunk driving isn't a reason for resigning yet who turfs a nominated candidate who wrote a 'critical letter to the editor'.
The NDP has to be cleaner than clean because the BCLiberal party has the moral code of a rattlesnake and the situation ethics of a Glenn Beck.
If you think for a moment that Carole James could live the kind of personal life that Gordon Campbell has lived for the past 10 - 15 years and get away with it untouched (as he has clearly done with the connivance of the MSM and the manipulation of the PAB) then you aren't just phoning it in, you're living on another planet - VENUS maybe.

How many among you......
Are guilty of "indulging" on a breast or wishing someone was reaching for your crotch......
Cameras are everywhere now,how many among you have tilted a drink or 2 at a party and chatted in a group of your sex and talked about what you would like to do with a certain body part of a certain women or man?
Thank god their were no cameras around in my youth, how many of you posters have puffed up some Thai sticks, ate the worm,or ended up in someone`s bed ? Or all 3 in one night?
The only difference between Lam and you,me,and the rest is............
Someone had a Camera/Stop the presses,I think he should run anyways.

Crap Luke! It's all about the corporate media.
The reason why he resigned were evident on today's Almanac on the CBC. A half hour spent discussing the issue when a host of more important scandals are not mentioned. One person brought up Campbell's drunk driving conviction and almost got cut off. There is a reluctance to talk about right-wing candidates when they really screw up but left wing candidates must be pure. Remember how many times BCTV replayed the shots taken through the kitchen window of Glen Clark's house? How many times have we seen the shots of the RCMP hauling files out of the Premier's Office. The candidate resigned because he didn't want this issue to be the major focus and had he stayed in the race that is exactly what would have happen. No sanctimony from Luke S. Redux changes that. Gerry Scott may be an ass, but so is Martyn Brown. That is hardly the point.
If the corporate media wants a story to have legs, they will provide the legs. They always have and always will. An apology only works if you are a Campbell Liberal.

I am getting very tired of
I am getting very tired of reading about issues dug up by politicians in attempts to blacken their opponents image. When are these people going to grow up and get down to the business of educating the public on issues that really matter such as the environment, social programs and the economy. I believe that most people have skeletons in their closets but without these life experiences we would be pretty boring people. The only personal issues having any business being publicized are those of a criminal nature.
Every election, federal and provincial, gives me less confidence in the people who could be or are running our country. I get the feeling that they think most of us base our decisions on false promises, scandals and exaggerated past accomplishments. I like to think we are more intelligent than that.

Pot calling Kettle Black
Young politicians of my generation who have grown up with Facebook are now in a pretty difficult position. The fact is, nearly every young person in politics has had some embarrassing photos of exuberant partying lying around. I predict that in 20 years from now, emerging photos of someone's youth excesses won't even make the news. Simply put, every candidate will have had embarrassing moments from their youth videotaped or photographed.
As for this current election, don't think that other emerging young candidates don't have embarrassing photos lying around. In fact, there is a now removed video of Skeena candidate Donny Van Dyk rather intoxicated declaring his intention to run for the leadership of the BC Liberals in 2020. It was a joke and a lot of his political friends rightly found it funny, but it would be ideal fodder for the NDP. So that makes me ask, is it really fair to attack young and otherwise capable candidates for stuff like this? Ray Lam was having harmless fun and it takes quite a high pedestal to think we never did similar things in our youth. I can assure you one thing, our politicians certainly didn't.

Campbell Says.....
.....the NDP don't have a rigoroous enough vetting process -- like the Liberals do.
News flash, Gordon! If the Liberals had this "rigorous" vetting process, you would be neither a candidate today, nor premier of BC. Remember a certain DUI incident? Well, that is much more serious than someone's hand on a boob.

Really....
I'm much more concerned about my Premier being arrested and thrown in jail in a foreign country for driving drunk and having his mug shot plastered on the front page of every newspaper in the world than I am of a 22 year old candidate with his hand on a woman's breast and two people tugging at his underwear on his private Facebook page. Talk about a double standard, Ms. MacNeill. It's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

"Talk about a double standard"
It was the NDP party, the party of Goodness and Purity, that pulled their candidate. Seems pretty harmless to me, but they pulled him anyway.
