Interested in helping public interest journalism thrive? We want to hear from you.

At a cool 15 years old, The Tyee is stronger than it’s ever been. With an award-winning roster of reporters and writers, a committed new “steward,” and nearly 2,000 generous readers who financially support our journalism on a monthly basis, we’re in a position to produce some of our best and most ambitious work to date.

Now we’re looking to add two new team members to help bring up our game, and bring a fresh perspective to our Vancouver newsroom. We are hiring a full-time editorial assistant and a full-time operations and development assistant, ideally to begin in early 2019.

Since 2003, The Tyee has published original stories about British Columbia and Canada’s news, culture and solutions to pressing issues. Our reporting has won many awards and the respect of our peers and readers. While some journalism gives the last word to power, we try to give the last word to ordinary folks.

We’re committed to producing high-quality, impactful stories that earn the trust of our smart and loyal readers. To do that our team works collaboratively and creatively, with an entrepreneurial spirit. We value big ideas and big ambitions, and we support each other to get the job done.

Our new Editorial Assistant will support senior editorial staff in many aspects of story production, such as fact checking, proofreading, layout, and social media. No day will look the same, and you’ll learn a lot in the role. It is a great job for someone interested in learning about the editing process or who is considering a longer-term career in editing.

A detailed job posting is available here.

Our new Operations and Development Assistant will support our business operations as an assistant to the publisher on tasks such as crowdfunding campaigns and event production. It is a great job for someone who wants to learn more about the business side of independent media.

A detailed job posting is available here.

To apply, please submit your cover letter and resume explaining why you are interested in either one of these opportunities to jobs (at) thetyee (dot) ca. Please include either “editorial assistant” or “operations and development assistant” in the subject line. The deadline for applications is Dec. 10, 2018.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from Aboriginal people, members of a visible minority and people with a disability. If you’re creative, hard-working and love independent media, we’d love to meet you. [Tyee]
