From Feb. 17 to 21, theatregoers can immerse themselves in the heart of the Pacific Ocean with UPU, a dynamic and electrifying theatre experience bringing the ocean’s rich voices to life. Headlining this year’s Warrior Festival at The Cultch, UPU embodies the spirit of transformative storytelling that defines the festival as a whole, and allows audiences to be part of something bigger than entertainment.
This acclaimed theatrical work, curated by award-winning poet Grace Iwashita-Taylor and led by powerhouse director Fasitua Amosa, consists of the upu (meaning “words”) from 23 poets. UPU spans decades and cultures, using the work of young activists, poet laureates and literary prize winners to connect a myriad of perspectives, all tied to the largest body of water on Earth.
After its sold-out run at the Sydney Opera House, The Cultch is excited to welcome the Canadian premiere of UPU, and to co-present the show with Full Circle: First Nations Performance.
UPU is grounded in Indigenous storytelling and brings forward Pacific Islander voices. The show is performed in English by six of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most celebrated actors, who masterfully create a snapshot of experiences as broad and deep as the ocean. Enhanced by evocative lights, projections and a multi-layered soundscape, it’s a celebration of the Pacific, its people and their stories.
In anticipation of this headliner show, The Cultch is giving away two tickets to one lucky Tyee reader, plus a $100 gift card to Absinthe Bistro, located at 952 Commercial Dr. For more information about UPU, running from Feb. 17 to 21 at the York Theatre, visit The Cultch’s website.
