Tyee Poll: How Could We Do Better on Health Care?

Last week on The Tyee, Julie S. Lalonde wrote about her experiences navigating the Canadian health care system, and the instinct to dismiss calls to improve it with the retort: “Well, at least you’re not American!”

She argues that “better than the U.S.” is a low bar, and one we should strive to eclipse.

“I can’t help but wonder how much progress we could make in Canada if we spent less energy dunking on Americans and more energy demanding a better medicare system for ourselves.”

Having lived with several health issues for much of her life, Lalonde is the biggest defender of Canadian health care. After all, it saved her life.

I would lay my wretched body on the line any day to defend it,” she writes. “But criticizing medicare is not an endorsement of privatization. It’s a request that we demand better.”

It’s an election year. She asks: Who is going to prioritize medicare?

Her story got us thinking: If we could make one new improvement to our health care system, what should it be? How could we do better on health care?
