Jane Fonda said she thought she was getting too old to be "on the barricades" of frontline protest. But, reading Naomi Klein's book This Changes Everything convinced the 77-year-old actress to grab her straw hat and lend her presence to the pipeline fight at Greenpeace's Toast the Coast rally in Vancouver.
The Jericho beach event drew attention to the dangers of pipeline and oil expansion on the coast and in the arctic. Over 5,000 people attended.
Fourty-five years after her infamous arrest following an anti-Vietnam-War protest, Fonda was out in full force. "They assume that our natural resources are limitless and that they have a right to plunder them," she said in her speech. "Even if it means leaving our communities riddled with cancer and birth defects and asthma. Even when it means killing off entire species. Even when it means killing us. This is not just irresponsible. This is abuse of power and abuse of human rights."
