As climate change intensifies and demand for water increases, many places around the world are feeling the stresses of water scarcity more acutely — some even face running out of water.
When a major city’s water system goes dry, it’s called “Day Zero.” For places like Mexico City, that could be as early as this summer. In Chennai, it’s already come and gone.
In his book, The Last Drop: Solving the World’s Water Crisis, environmental journalist Tim Smedley looks at the ways cities around the world are facing the water crisis, from water pollution, to the effects of groundwater overuse in places like Mexico City and Beijing, to issues of flood mitigation and reservoir storage.
Municipalities in B.C. are more used to abundant water than many places across the globe — but over the years residents have become familiar with the impacts of water scarcity and the intensifying need to protect the resource.
With this in mind, we want to ask:
