Richard Wagamese was an Ojibway from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in northwestern Ontario, and an acclaimed bestselling author of fiction and non-fiction.
Wagamese’s book Indian Horse (Douglas & McIntyre), a CBC Canada Reads finalist, was winner of the inaugural Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature and was made into a feature film (2017).
His non-fiction includes the essay collections One Native Life and One Story, One Song (D&M 2009 and 2011), as well as a collection of personal meditations, Embers (2016), and One Drum (2019).
Wagamese has won numerous awards and recognition for his writing, including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Media and Communication, the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize, the Canada Reads People’s Choice Award, and the Writers’ Trust of Canada’s Matt Cohen Award.
Born on Oct. 14, 1955, Wagamese died on March 10, 2017, in Kamloops, B.C.
