A Riot of Crazy Scenes
Photos from Tyee readers and a sampling of what's being said online about last night's riot.
How do you crowd-source the experience of being in an out-of-control crowd? You browse through The Your BC photo pool of The Tyee and pull out some of the best images kindly provided by our talented community. Have a click through above.
Wonder who are those people so seemingly happy to be rioting? Hugh Madbish says he was there. "had a mad time at the vancouver riots," he writes on his Facebook page. "flipped a car and punched a pig and stole $2000 worth of ephedrine come at me cop phaggots"
John Carlo says on Facebook that he was there, too. "tear gas flashbang grenades and police brutality dont faze the riot of the century! shit was too ill, fuckin wit VanCity all night #nothinquitelikeagoodriot"
Doug Campbell tried to make sense of it by publishing on Facebook this ditty: "A mob in Vancouver felt pains; Cuz their team couldn't make any gains; When some loser yelled RIOT; The crowd said let's try it; Because they all had shit for brains!"
And myriad tweets continue to offer pithy insights, such as:
"What we have learned from the Stanley Cup riots of 2011: Vancouverites are not smoking nearly as much pot as was previously thought." -- @kyranpittman
"In the #Arab world people riot for freedom. In #Vancouver, people riot because their team lost a hockey tournament" -- @Algarf
"I'm on site at Granville and Georgia - streets almost spotless. Lots of love messages of healing #vancouvercleanup so proud - thanks!" -- @hummingbird604
"Premier #christie #Clark uses #vancouver #Riot cleanup as photo-op. Cute little dress, pearls, white shoes "helping"? NO http://t.co/3k4RnCr" -- @Hippiesippie
"Just heard a caller on @team1040 blame the #riot on BC Liberal government and the #HST. Impressive leap right there. #shakinghead" -- @CalynShaw
"It may be too soon to point this out, but the UFC crowd Saturday didn't have a single incident. With alcohol beingsold." #riot #canucksriot -- @ChrisParry
"I'm predicting citizens of Van. will not hesitate to flood the streets tonight to demonstrate solidarity with Greek protestors." -- @jritch:
If you are interested in tapping into the social media conversation about the riot and what comes after, a couple of particularly productive Twitter hashtags seem to be #vancouvercleanup and #thisismyvancouver.
We invite you to broaden that list by posting your own favourite riot related online destinations in the comments. ![]()

BLame the media
BLame the media hype....
they crank and rev
everything up to the point you'd think we were on the verge of WWI....
.....cbc is so proud of its 'fan zone' and there are no politics on
the radio....so guess what happens......people get jacked up by the
'1984ish' media, juiced up on booze, hooped up on hype, live shitty lives
at crap wages in crowded condos, and can't go to 'gala-gala' dos , like
Fred Lee etc., so they have the kind of fun that's available......
and
furthermore I'm glad they lost because Christy Clark and Harper would be gloating about the brilliance of it all on their watch and shine in its reflected glory....and once the media helps create the beast (mad fans who like to riot) it now gives them something else (not political) to earnestly discuss.....

riot
This was a planned event .You do not bring a molotov cocktail and not expect to use it. I was very disappointed in the media encouraging the looky lous and asking them to send video. These very people looking for 5 minutes of you tube fame helped to fuel the flames. Arrest them all I say.Another thin the medis needs to be discouraged in calling them fans. They certainly are not that.

CBC
You would think with a game as violent as hockey, the broadcaster of it, CBC-TV, would put in "cool" ads between the hockey battling.
On the contrary, the selected ads were for violent movies that made the hockey look like kindergarten activities in the play box.
No doubt in a few weeks they'll be a CBC Ideas program on how to combat violence in the media :).
And here's a broadcaster fighting for its credibility in Canadian society!

World class riot in a not so world class city
I want to see these hooligan thugs to be arrested and then put to a work camp where they work 10 hours a day for 0 money! There are plenty of places in this city that needs cleaning, picking up garbage etc. Make them work. This applies to all those thugs too who stood by and watched and took photos.
The rioters are one thing, they are clearly criminals. Their lives turned in the wrong direction. They need help and put to hard work so that they learn respect.
I am more worried about those thugs who stood by. Not participating still makes you guilty. What kind of a person are you standing by and watching? Where is your morale? Where is your integrity?
I guess none of those left when alcohol and drug is involved.
An absolute disgrace what happened. But I am not surprised. Hockey became a violent game and it attracts those who also like violence. Duh...
It is a sad testament of the kind of society we are becoming. Rioters and then their onlookers - 20 somethings - one day these will be the working class of this country. Perhaps politicians and business people. I guess they can put it onto their resume - I watched the 2011 riot. It was lots of fun.
There are really no words to describe this.

Why?
Was it the rumour that the NHL wanted an American team to win the Cup because they are losing money due to poor attendance there? Was this the reason for the blatant bias in favor of the Bruins ....especially in Boston? Was it because, once again, the seats for the game were for the priviledged who had 2,000 to 8,000 or more for a ticket? The rioters were mostly young and male. Where does all that anger come from? Are these the kids who grew up on video games and computers while parents were out of the home acquiring more stuff....or, perhaps, trying to make ends meet and put food on the table? Where does the complete lack of respect for others come from? Watching Canada on the world stage...G20....deceit and manipulation at the upper levels of our society that goes unpunished...or is even rewarded? The fact that the future is so obviously desolate while our planet is destroyed by greed? These rioters are mostly of the age that will live die in the future that has been, and is, being created for them. I could go on and on but these young men were not born thugs....the thugs were created....by what?

Soooo
If there was a back pack of gas bombs on the sky train, has anyone seen pictures of these things being thrown at the riot the other night?

canadians once said they
canadians once said they wanted "peace, order and good government." Curiously, this is exactly what the corporate parasite fascists want too.
Turn in your neighbours, turn in your friends, turn in the fellow you've been quarrelling with, it all seems so familiar, off to G-Bay with anyone who ain't "us"...imperialist tendencies will always come back home to roost

American teams have won the Cup for the last 18 years in a row. US attendance wasn't helped by the previous 17 cups so I doubt that was the reason for the bad officiating.

Rebels with a cause?
One observation that causes me to wonder....the Library, which is right in the middle of the mayhem, was not touched. Nothing! Could the idiots actually have some perceived basis for their actions? Business after business were destroyed. Were they more than just a handy target?

cause? lol
duh! no! just a bunch of wankers getting people fired up about nothing (and to them, there's nothing worth stealing in the library - you think those hooligans read much! lol)
As for the rest of us, it would have helped if we weren't all watching, taking pics, and being entertained (albeit also disturbed) by the spectacle.
We all need to grow up! Vancouver is still young - hopefully, we can learn from this experience and next time, not stand around watching the lunacy unfold.

Spotless
"I'm on site at Granville and Georgia - streets almost spotless.
I was there 24 hours later too to see the garbage already overflowing and onto the street, seriously I am not trying to nit and pick. Plus your above average amount of smokers as opposed to other clean areas of the City. Proud? What a wonderful sense of humor these rioters do so imbue into us. Who would have thought this be the happy by product of that teen aged angst seeking an outlet. damn if only I was 20 years younger I could have counted my self in with the stupid, the dumb, the miscreants.
