Catharine Winstanley

Catharine A. Winstanley is a behavioural neuroscientist at the University of British Columbia.

She obtained a first-class honours degree in psychology and physiology from the University of Oxford and subsequently completed a PhD at the department of experimental psychology at the University of Cambridge.

Winstanley is a professor in the department of psychology and an associate member of the division of neurology at UBC. She is also currently the director of the graduate program in neuroscience.

Her research is focused on understanding the neurobiological regulation of cognitive traits such as impulsivity and decision-making, with the goal of using this knowledge to improve treatments for psychiatric disorders such as problem gambling and drug addiction.

In 2020, she was elected to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles.

Winstanley’s lab is located within the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, a unit purposefully designed to facilitate translation between preclinical and clinical discoveries, such that complementary programs of research are positioned within the same setting as advanced patient care. Here, she facilitates the Reconciliation Matters Reading Group as part of her Truth and Reconciliation journey.
