Akberet Beyene

Akberet Beyene is a writer who grew up in Eritrea during the thirty-year Eritrean–Ethiopian war. She achieved a Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Asmara and worked for almost twenty years for the national TV station, where she became well known for producing documentaries about social, political, and health issues for women and youth. She fled to Canada in 2011, when the dictatorship’s relentless persecution of journalists threatened her life. In 2019, after years of adjustment and suffering from PTSD, Akberet became a proud Canadian, deeply grateful for life and for the support and opportunities in Canada. She is currently pursuing a career as a writer in British Columbia, exploring her personal experiences.
