Tyee to Sponsor Vancouver Mayoral Race Debate
Teams with 24 Hours to let three Vision candidates spar.
Ready to rumble!
The Tyee and 24 Hours/Vancouver are sponsoring a debate later this month among the three candidates for the Vision Vancouver mayoral nomination.
The candidates are former parks board chair Allan De Genova, city councillor Raymond Louie and MLA Gregor Robertson. This is likely to be the first time all three contestants are in the same room sparring and facing questions since each announced their desire to run for mayor under the Vision banner.
The debate will take place the evening of May 21. The three candidates will field a wide range of questions from a panel of three veteran political journalists. Neither the questions nor the topics will be given to the candidates in advance. Time will be allowed for the candidates to rebut one another.
Debate Info
Who: Vision Vancouver mayoral candidates Gregor Roberston, Raymond Louie and Allan De Genova
When: May 21, 8 p.m.
Where: Norman Rothstein Theatre at the Jewish Community Centre (41st and Oak).
Tickets: No charge; go to www.votevision.ca
"We're very excited about our three mayoral candidates squaring off for the first time on stage, debating their visions and ideas for Vancouver," said Vision co-chair Mike Magee. "There's been so much excitement generated from this nomination race, and now our members will have the opportunity to see the candidates in action."
Never before in Vancouver has a political party held a nomination contest so early in the year. Never before have three experienced politicians competed so fiercely for a Vancouver party's nomination. Vision Vancouver will select its candidate in a nomination convention on June 15, 2008, at the Croatian Cultural Centre. Citizens must join Vision Vancouver by May 15 in order to vote at the party convention.
Offer made to NPA
The Tyee and 24 Hours/Vancouver offered to sponsor a similar debate among candidates for the Non Partisan Association mayoral nomination. The NPA declined. NPA chair Matthew Taylor indicated the party is planning to host its own candidates' "event."
The Tyee and 24 Hours have let the NPA's Taylor know they are still willing to organize a comparable event in advance of the NPA's June 8 nomination convention.
No members of the Coalition of Progressive Electors have formally declared their intent to run for mayor, though COPE councillor David Cadman has told The Tyee he is likely to do so.
All news media invited
The Tyee and 24 Hours expect to be able to broadcast the May 21 Vision debate online. All news media are invited to cover the debate, and many members have already said they will.
The Tyee is B.C.'s leading online-only magazine of news and culture, getting a quarter-million visits a month. 24 Hours is the largest free daily in Vancouver, reaching 224,000 readers a day.
The 90-minute debate will take place in the Norman Rothstein Theatre at the Jewish Community Centre (41st and Oak). The debate will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is free. To find out about tickets, go to the Vision Vancouver website.

Anyone But Sullivan:
Voters need to know that Sullivan was the ONLY member of city council to oppose a commission into the tragic death of Frank Paul.
At said Commission, gross negligence has been admitted, across the board. And Sullivan wanted it covered up. What sort of values would prop that moral sickness? As far as I am concerned Sullivan is an accessory after the fact of negligent homicide of a man who needed assistance from our paid protective surrogates. Sullivan wanted scrutiny to die with Frank Paul, in that filthy downtown ally. You can trust Sullivan as far as you can spit against a hurricane.
Sullivan supporters: show your depraved faces and attempt to defend your mayor. We are waiting.

Fnif.....
I hope Sullivan wins the nomination, the better to smackdown the NPA in November. A more useless bunch of yes-men and -women I've never seen since the 1960s. Not an orginal thinker in the bunch, although I admit occasionally Ladner tries. Sometimes.
Sam's got a surprise coming....

DeGenova....green????!!!
If green is the mantra, what's DeGenova chanting for? The man led the charge to cut down 16 hectares of Stanley Park for the widening of the causeway. As a result, the average speed of traffic on the causeway has gone up 8 kmh, and the number of fatal accidents has not gone down at all - three fatalities in the last year alone - more than the worst intersection on Knight St. at 49th.
DeGenova doesn't belong in Vision. He belongs with the Realtor's Party - the NPA. Send him packing.

Issue Suggestion
Please check out the website of the inquiry into the Taser-death of Robert Dziekanski at YVR. What a load of crap; it's mostly cops presenting corporate interest pseudo science. A Victoria officer is going to tell us what Taser trainees learn in their "2 hours" of training in "exited delerium syndrome." Unfortunately for those bozos, no medical or psychiatric board recognizes that voodoo.

A debate! What fun!
Congrats to the Tyee and to 24 hours for this brilliant idea. Now if someone would do some research on De Genova's tie-ins between clients and proposals to the Park's Board. This all could become very interesting. I attended a meeting when the Westside Academy wanted to take over land at Jericho Beach including Park land. The school lost thanks to quick action by the Hostel supporters. De Genova left the room when it came to a vote, so I followed him outside and what ws he doing? Why talking to reps from the school, of course. I covered this event for the Georgia Straight.

What Me Libel?
I don't libel, so easy on edit abuse.
I attended the Taser Inquiry today. It is all cop/no objectivity. The cops finally played their cards; they want to use Tasers for use as a punitive weapon against non-compliant persons. Today, VPD trainer, Joe Jackson, claimed that the "wrestling down" technique of arrest, is dangerous and he suggested general use of Tasers. Our protective surrogates want a power to work without mussing their hair.
Make sure you pay your transit fares; otherwise expect a Taser jolt.

pay your fare or... what?
The bus driver on my trip downtown today was too busy texting on her cel phone to tell the freeloader who got on the bus... to get off.
