The Future of Social Media

Tod Maffin rounds up the blogs.

[Editor's note: Tod Maffin has a national CBC technology column, is a podcaster and founding editor of Canada Podcasts.ca – a podcast directory, and a social media strategist. On his blog, he often writes about social media and where it's going. What follows are his must-read blogs.]

It seems everyone these days has a blog -- from the 12-year-old down the street to the well-meaning (if somewhat misguided) CEO. But technology adoption is a double-edged sword -- you may indeed have a blog or podcast and feel ahead of the game, but if you're not keeping an eye on what's coming next, you could end up being the Friendster on your block.

Here are some blogs that I and readers of my own blog recommend:

Mitch Joel: Six Pixels of Separation Mitch runs Twist Image, a highly successful marketing firm in Montreal. His blog focuses primarily on the use of blogs, podcasts and the web to help marketers understand this ever-changing medium. Posts range from changing models of content delivery to online ad campaigns. Definitely worth bookmar-- er, subscribing to... if you're involved in digital marketing in any way.

Tod Maffin's must-read social networking blogs:

Joe Thornley: Pro PR Joe is principal of Thornley Fallis, a communications firm in Ottawa and Toronto. Joe's blog is widely regarded as a thought-leader in how the public relations industry is using social media to communicate more effectively. Joe also travels around lots to industry conferences and interviews leading idea people in the social media space, and posts the interviews online. (Full disclosure: My strategy firm FourSevens is an associate of Joe Thornley's design firm, 76 Design.)

Robert Scoble: Scobelizer Robert has been the go-to guy on corporate blogging for a while now. Ever since he dragged Microsoft kicking and screaming into the social media space, he's been a popular lecturer on the topic. His blog tends to be a bit frantic and random, but he's always on the cusp of breaking tech news and new innovations in social media.

Mark Blevis and Bob Goyetche Bob and Mark are among Canada's podcasting pioneers. They both host the Podcasters Across Borders conference each year, bringing together Canadian bloggers and podcasters. If anybody knows where the wind is shifting in the audioblog/podcast space in Canada, it's these two guys.

Julien Smith: In Over Your Head Julien hails from Montreal and produces a profitable (gasp!) podcast. He manages to blend his love for music into the social media space, and it's so popular that PodShow picked him up as a featured performer. Julien's got his eye on the happening scene, and I follow his blog closely to pick up tidbits of new production and business models in social media.

    THIS is the future???

    The title of this little "essay" would indicate that there would be a discussion of the future of social media.
    Instead, a more appropriate title would simply have been "My favorite blogs that can be relied on to express a favorable opinion of Tod Maffin."

    Very, very few people would ever be interested in any of these blogs.
    The first one he refers to is his own.
    The second one in the list is a business partner who schills for Tod Maffin.

    I believe the reason Tod decided to list his friend's blogs is because he has no clue whatsoever about the future of social media.
    And neither do his friends.
    Yet Tod bills himself as a "Futurist", but the last prediction of his that I can recall, was his declaration two years ago that "email is dead."
    Perhaps he sees the future as it will be a hundred years from now.

    There is one more blog that Tod forgot to mention but that he never misses - MINE! on Tod Maffin

    SOCIAL Media? As in human beings exchanging ideas?

    This is so depressing! Not a human concern in sight!

    If this is "The Future of Social Media" I want off this stupid bandwagon, because it's all about disconnecting people from reality. What a desperately unlovely landscape Tod Mafin works in. Nothing "social" about it.

    There are so many good, worthy blogs which are working to re-connect people with the great social issues of the day!

    Maybe somebody just got the title wrong.

    6 men?

    Really -- six guys (seemingly white middle-class guys but perhaps I am too quick to judge) are the future of social media? I'm sure these sites have a lot to offer, but doesn't it seem troubling that much of the social world is absent in this picture?

    Social media is a blank piece of paper, on which you write "I think you're cute" and then ask your friends to pass up it to the redhead at the front of the class.

    Social media is the Personal classified ads in a newspaper.
    Open-line radio shows have been around for more than 40 years, and Letters To The Editor far longer. More social media.

    What the Tyee has gotten suckered into here is allowing Tod Maffin to promote companies that are in the business of selling their marketing services.
    And OilyBlog jumped right in, so as not to be left out.

    The only insight into social media here is how easily anybody can be taken advantage of by people who bill themselves as strategists, and "futurists".

    Censorship at the Tyee

    I see where even the Tyee is afraid of opinions and words.
    Apparently there's such a thing as too much truth.
    My comments were valid, yet deleted.
    And I suspect that Tod himself was involved in censoring them.

    But it's ok to use the comments section to plug your company, as the guy at the top does.

    A least we now know a lot more about this website.

    These being largely public relations services that Maffin uses to point to as the Future ...

    perhaps the good, educated people at The Tyee would care to help it's readers discern the difference between public relations and propaganda ...

    I'm interested in Tod because he is described by the editor of The Tyee as a technologist, and the 3rd Tuesday group seems to be comprised of technical people as well.

    I'm interested in their technological expertise, not necessarily their marketing and promotional backgrounds. Hopefully, they'll be interested in my marketing and promotion experience.

    If I hang with a bunch of like minded marketing people we compete for the same business. If I explore the 3rd Tuesday group I might learn something about the rapidly changing technological side of social marketing.

    I don't feel suckered at all.

    Obviously, something happened between you and Tod, but please don't drag me into your personal squabble.
