Your Top Issues, So Far
Our election reporting fundraiser is halfway there. Here's what the first wave of donors want targeted by Tyee reporters.
Are these your issues? People who've given so far earmarked their money to fund election reporting in these areas.
You've probably heard by now: The Tyee is raising money to cover the provincial election that's likely coming soon to British Columbia.
It's been a week since we first asked you to vote on your top election-related issues and to donate to our Election Reporting Fund, so we're checking in to let you know where we stand.
The chart above shows the breakdown of issues that you who have donated are directing The Tyee to investigate leading into and during the next provincial election in B.C.
Here's what we've heard from those who have given:
Almost half of donors have asked us to use their money as we see fit, making "Tyee's Choice" the most popular option.
Environmental news is also a top priority. Donors are telling us they want better coverage of issues like smart meters, run-of-river projects, fracking, oil tankers off the B.C. coast, food security, and climate change.
Arts and culture issues are also a top news priority for readers as the candidates campaign for leadership of our province.
So to all those that have donated to fund election coverage and told us what news matters most, thank you. You've pulled us halfway to our goal already, with $5,000 received.
For you who haven't yet voted and donated, there's still time to give, and to help us reach our goal of raising $10,000.
Have a look at the chart above. How is your top issue doing? Does it need a little boost? You can help make sure it gets plenty of coverage by voting and donating now.
Just CLICK HERE.
If you prefer to vote and donate by mail, we can be reached at:
The Tyee. PO Box 88484. Vancouver, B.C. V6A 4A7
Remember, more votes = more reporting. Before we close the fundraiser on Friday, you can also share this with your friends, family, and co-workers, or post it on Facebook or Twitter using the links at the top and bottom of this page. ![]()

So....
it reads as if you have to donate if you want to vote. Which seems to read that if you can't afford to donate your opinion and wishes don't count and won't be considered.
Another reason to wish you could win the big big BIG six four nine.

We're always interested in hearing the opinions and wishes of our readers. The terms of this fundraiser, though, is that if you give, you also get to direct where that money of yours is spent.
Thanks for the opportunity to clarify that!

Interesting...
The topics most people think of as "left" issues, Healthcare, Housing, Poverty & Homelessness, Education... these are the subjects people least want TheTyee to cover..... but then, again, these are likely covered in the "Tyee's Choice" option....

well, David...
I support your fund raising.
Obviously there are people here, such as myself, who cannot possibly donate. You might want to throw a sop to us, as we've become not only regular readers of the Tyee, but promoters of it, and tireless commenters. As I've said, a sop.

I'm not sure what your criticism is, if it is that. I've said here and many times how much we appreciate all our readers -- you are truly the reason for our existence -- and we are always grateful to receive suggestions about where we should put our reporting efforts. Believe me, we receive a lot of those suggestions. However in this case, we are saying that if you give us funding for reporting, you also have the right to direct where that funding would go. We are empowering those who can and choose to give to have a solid say over where their own money is spent. And we've set no limit on the amount one could give, by the way. The price of a cup of coffee would be welcome, I assure you.
I'm not sure what a 'sop' would be. The word itself sounds a bit demeaning and therefore not at all resonant with how I, and my colleagues, feel about all our readers. We publish the Tyee every day for your enjoyment and benefit, and have open channels, like these comment threads, for your suggestions. Is there something else you are requesting?

No Surprise
Outside of the Tyee's choice the pie chart speaks volumes. I always knew that Vancouver never really gave a dot about it's poverty and social issues and the 16% Environment just confirms this. People here are so dreadfully misguided it makes me want to weep.

Only using the views of
Only using the views of those who donate excludes views of the most vulnerable in our society, the impoverished. I think they are equally entitled to a voice. I realize that was not your intention, but I would like to donate but I would rather eat.

Remember, the fundraiser is for extra reporting we will be able to do on top of what we already do. Which includes much focus on those most vulnerable. Free of charge.

How about Libya?
And its looting and pillaging rebels with Al Qaeda links. Baird, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister wants rebels to be patient with the knowledge Canada's by their side. NATO is dropping its bombs in Libya and innocent people are being killed.
Western Bankers do their own raping and pillaging as billions of Libya's investment dollars get wasted on Wall street.
Canada's involvement is supposed to be under a billion but there is no immediate end near. Layton has no problem with the illegal war but wants to review it in 3 months. Is there an end near and if not will the people continue to tolerate another ground war?
