The audiobook sample you are about to listen to is the eighteenth chapter of Trauma Farm: A Rebel History of Rural Life, by B.C.-based writer Brian Brett and narrated by Michael Puttonen.
The novel, set over one 18-year-long day on Brett's small, somewhat madcap farm on Saltspring Island, won the 2009 Writers' Trust of Canada non-fiction prize and the BC Booksellers' Choice Award. It made its way into the Amazon, Globe and Mail, and Times Literary Supplement top 100 book lists for 2009.
It's a story that begins naked in darkness -- the night romp of the farmer. As the day unfolds, Brett teaches the reader everything from the tending of livestock, poultry, orchards, gardens, machinery, and fields, to the social intricacies of rural communities, according to Post Hypnotic Press, the producer of this audiobook version.
Trauma Farm is a mediation, and certainly a political one, about food and our freedom to grow it. And if you've never heard Brett's rhapsody on the egg, well, don't deny yourself the pleasure. Breakfast will never again taste the same.
