Gordon Campbell's Year: An Unauthorized Annual Report
Some facts behind the bragging.
'Reach out and help'
The special year end video message on Premier Campbell's website concluded by saying: "Reach out and help someone who isn't quite as fortunate as you are."
That came from the premier who has presided over a doubling in the number of homeless, while welfare rates were frozen, or in some cases cut.
That came from the premier who announced rental assistance for low-income workers, but said those on welfare need not apply as they are ineligible.
That came from the premier who had to be told by Ted Hughes that his cuts to child protection services were wrong.
The written version of the premier's year-end message came in the form of an opinion editorial that described 2006 as the "year of the agreement." That description is bound to evoke memories of 2002, when Campbell presided over the year of the broken contract.
In his year-end interview with Keith Baldrey of Global TV, when asked about his switch on aboriginal issues, Campbell said he learned. That invites a look at whether the lesson was about changing policies or whether it was just about using less confrontational messaging.
The premier's op-ed piece mentioned the Central Coast and North Coast Land and Resource Management Plan, settlements in 139 public-sector collective agreements, the trade and labour mobility agreement with Alberta, the federal government's transfer of all social housing resources and responsibilities to the province, the softwood lumber deal, the new relationship with First Nations, movement on control of First Nations' education, agreement to improve First Nations' health status, and the initialling of three final agreements in the treaty process.
If one doesn't look too closely at the details, it would be possible to boast about those 2006 highlights; however, the devil is in the details.
Great Bear Rainforest
According to the premier's op-ed piece, agreements between the province, First Nations, communities, environmental activists and industry groups will protect 1.8 million hectares (an area more than three times the size of P.E.I.) and create the new Spirit Bear Conservancy, which will provide a lasting home for the province's official mammal, the Spirit Bear. It failed to mention that days before the announcement, the province copyrighted the name "Spirit Bear."
Environmentalists who invented the names "Spirit Bear" and "Great Bear Rainforest" deserve credit for a struggle that lasted almost 20 years. While the formal land-use plan is important, it does not end that struggle.
The provincial-First Nation land use agreements, which are key to the Central Coast and North Coast Land and Resource Management Plan, include a commitment to establish a North Coast Plan Implementation and Monitoring Committee (NC PIMC), a Central Coast Plan Implementation and Monitoring Committee (CC PIMC) and an Ecosystem-Based Management Working Group (EBM WG). Nothing in government announcements or on the government website indicates progress in the establishment of those committees. Work on protecting the Great Bear Rainforest is ongoing.
The Campbell government will be tested in 2007 and beyond to demonstrate that measurable outcomes have been established against which progress in implementing the agreements can be measured. Already in 2006, the Raincoast Conservation Society reported that "less than 20 per cent of salmon watersheds on the central and north coast of B.C. will receive full protection under the recently announced Great Bear Rainforest agreement." The society's analysis of 499 salmon watersheds found that 77 per cent had less than half of the watershed land-base protected.
Collective bargaining
Those who support collective bargaining believe that a good deal is one that is agreed to by both sides; hence, both the Campbell government and the unions deserve credit for negotiating agreements that affect over 300,000 public sector workers, without the need for job action. A caller to a talk show asked why no one was protesting what he thought were rich settlements, four- or five-year agreements averaging 2 per cent to 2.5 per cent per year wage increases plus signing bonuses of $3,000 to $4,000. The answer is that there is no longer anyone like Gordon Campbell in opposition leading the reactionary political right in an effort to get elected.
Imagine what would have happened if an NDP government had awarded $1 billion in signing bonuses to public sector workers! It is likely that there would have been demonstrations on the lawns of the legislature. The reactionary right's support can be taken for granted by Campbell.
Signing bonuses are not new, but it is hard to find much precedent for bonuses of $3,000 to $4,000. In 2008, when they file their income taxes for 2007, many public sector workers will report incomes that are lower than they had with their 2006 bonuses. On an income of $50,000, an increase of 2.5 per cent is $1,250. It takes three years of increases like that to catch up to the year of the signing bonus. The agreements take the government a year or two beyond the May 2009 election, but they do not guarantee that public sector workers will remain satisfied that long. When inflation is factored in, most public sector workers will see their real incomes decline after the peak reached with the signing bonus.
Internal trade with Alberta
On April 28, 2006, the British Columbia-Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement was signed. It comes into force on April 1, 2007, but the transitional period won't end until April 1, 2009. What it means for British Columbia probably won't be understood until well after the May 2009 election.
The Campbell government claims that the "agreement has the potential to add $4.8 billion to real GDP and create 78,000 new jobs in B.C. alone." What is not clear is how that will be measured and reported on to British Columbians.
Consider one example: Alberta is granting pharmacists the power to prescribe many medications, notwithstanding the strong opposition of the Alberta Medical Association. The agreement covers pharmacists. Will the agreement mean that B.C. must grant pharmacists equal power? If it doesn't, then what other standards and regulations will be exempted? It will be years before anyone will be able to see measurable results -- good or bad.
Social housing
The B.C. Housing website reports that: "On June 19, 2006, the government of Canada and the province of British Columbia signed the Canada-B.C. Social Housing Agreement, transferring the administration of 51,600 social housing units to the province of British Columbia."
Over half, 27,400, of the federal housing units were already administered by the province. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) will remain responsible for approximately 12,650 co-operative housing units and just over 5,000 housing units on-reserve. The province will gain responsibility for about 24,000 social housing units that are currently administered by CHMC. While the Campbell government boasts that this is an example of a successful agreement, the jury is out on what it means for people in need of social housing. The deal appears to put a 30-year cap on the federal commitment to B.C. for social housing.
Softwood
The Softwood Lumber Agreement was only adopted after the Harper government beat the Canadian lumber industry into submission with the help of the Campbell government. The agreement provides a windfall for the provincial government when lumber prices are down, as they are now. There is a 15 per cent export tax when the Random Lengths Composite price is below $315 US, as it is now. The duty can increase by 50 per cent if the "surge penalty" kicks in, which happens when quotas are exceeded.
The export tax is collected by Canada and remitted to the province. In her second quarter financial report released in November, Finance Minister Carole Taylor estimated that taxes flowing to the province from the agreement will yield $208 million in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007. The agreement provides that none of those funds can be used to help the industry that is hurt by the agreement and by low prices. What kind of a government would boast about that kind of a deal?
First Nations
The Campbell government's about face in its attitude to First Nations is truly breathtaking; nevertheless, the premier fails to acknowledge the extent of the change. It is fair to say that matters affecting First Nations have finally become non-partisan, after an unfortunate referendum conducted by the Campbell government in its first term. There remains a role for critics to hold the Campbell government accountable for achieving measurable outcomes. Commitments on health and education and the initialling of treaties are steps in a process, but what counts is whether the gaps close between the aboriginal population and other British Columbians.
The First Nations Health Plan could serve as a model of how outcomes expected from government commitments should be specified and measured. It promises that "the provincial health officer will issue aboriginal health status reports every five years, with interim updates every two years." Attention should be paid to those accountability reports, and corrective action should be taken when necessary to ensure that the targets aren't postponed or weakened.
Opposition
The official Opposition didn't release its own version of a year-end review for 2006. As of Jan. 1, 2007 the most recent release on the website for the official Opposition is a call for a park feasibility study for the Flathead Valley. The NDP's website also ignored the traditional year-end review in favour of a focus on "credit card medicine" and the growth of private health care under the Campbell government. Polling results were disappointing for many New Democrats in 2006 as the Campbell Liberals finished the year with a nine-point lead, 45 per cent to 39 per cent, with 16 per cent for the Greens. Of course, the next provincial election isn't until May 12, 2009.
If the Opposition performs as it did during the brief fall sitting of the legislature, support for the Liberals may waver. During those four days, the government felt the heat on political interference in a freedom of information request regarding the Coroners Service, B.C. Hydro contracts for coal-fired power plants, failures of private post-secondary institutions, certification of home inspectors and private health care.
It is difficult, however, for the Opposition to make any of its criticisms more than a 24-hour story; it takes new information to sustain a story in the news media, and hence keep in it front of the public. That allows the government to set and control the agenda, particularly when the legislature is not sitting.
Since the government's year-end boast about agreements had more to do with process than with measurable outcomes, the Opposition may be able to revisit those matters as it holds the government to account for results. That should make 2007 an interesting year.
2007
January is likely to be a slow period on the political calendar unless the government comes up with some surprises. The Legislature will sit for a speech from the throne on Feb. 13 and for the 2007-2008 Budget on Feb. 20. That is when British Columbians will finally hear what the Campbell government intends to do about welfare rates, the shelter allowance and homelessness.
It is embarrassing for a province that is so rich to ignore those who are being left behind. As the premier said in his year-end video, "Reach out and help someone who isn't quite as fortunate as you are." ![]()

Campbell's just another U.S. multinational sellout traitor puppet of the empire. The sale of BC Gas, BC Rail, attemped sale of BC ferries behind our backs, BC Hyrdo if he could, BCAA should be sold soon and all for a personal sellers fee. What a dirty crook.
His deregulation in the mining sector is a complete and total head shake. Farmed fish to his relatives, pushed private healthcare to his family and closest friends and all the while, he makes the poorest pay for it.
His Liberal party website is full of distortions and lies. Campbell's one of the dirtiest politicians I've ever witnessed in my life, hands down. Can't wait for voters in this province to wake up and vote this drunken crooked bum out so we can begin prosecuting Campbell and his ministers and MLA's for their stealing and traitorous mistrust of public institutions and funds.

In British Columbia the government could pay for television commercials featuring a quartet loudly singing a song titled “Vote Liberal, A Coalition of Community Minded, Caring, Concerned Politicians Who Will Give You Everything While Lowering Taxes, Oh And By the Way Ignore Those Axes, They’re For The Seniors, The Children, The Women and, Lest We Forget, The Working Poor.â€

I must be careful with my comments about Campbell, as Beers deleted the last one I posted, saying it was libelous.
I think Campbell is a dangerous man. I think Campbell is working for interests other than those for BC. I think Campbell plays fast and lose with the truth, for the pure joy of it. So many questions the mainstream papers will not ask.
The only reason that Campbell's polling results are better than the NDP's is that Carole James is so, so, so bad. She's terrible; a wet noodle could do better and why the NDP do not dump her is a mystery.
The NDP have a long history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, With James, that will not happen as it will be a pleasure just not voting for her!
How we have come to this evil end in BC, demomstrates how non-involved our citizens are about politics here. God help us, our ignorance (unwilling to accept the truth) on all issues, are leading us down a dark path. As it stands now, most would vote for Adolf Hitler, if he were to run for the Liberals!
I will be voting Green in the next election, simply as a protest against two political parties that I just can not support. The only other solution is an armed rebellion and hang the lot of them.

It scares me to agree with Grumpy. But agree I must. on the one hand we have Gordo mean spirited and not afraid to victimize any segment of society. On the left we have Carol James who spends more time with her head in the sand that an Ostrich. We have the tweedle dee and tweedle dumpling scenario. As a result we are almost guaranteed Campbell by default. Compared to James even Bob Skelly looks good by comparison. The NDP either needs to make some changes soon or decide it has no desire to be opposition let alone government again and move over for a new Left of Center alternative

This one could kill Campbell politcally. The company that owns the Martin Mars water bomber is selling them and the province has no interest in keeping them.
Though old, they are superbly built and are the largesat water bomber in the world. Campbell did not want to pay for them to operate in the disaterous Kelowna fires, yet it was a perfect setting. Large lake for water pick up and the ability to dump large amounts of water on local areas.
In the Kelowna area many people still regard the non-use of the Martins as a criminal act.
Now fast forward to Delta; with global warming, the largely peat and pine Burns bog ignites in the summer. The last big fire required the Martins to drop large amount of water to prevent a major catastrophe. The smaller bombers just cannot dot the job as a peat fire burns underground and a large dump of water is needed to flood the area.
Summer 2009. It is hot and muggy and a lightning strike ignites burns bog. Within hours the tinder dry bog explodes into a inferno. A strong Westerly pushes the fire up into North Delta and with no large water bombers to help, large parts of north Delta go up into flames with hot ashe ignating grass and homes as far away as Cloverdale.
5 days, 20 deaths & 800 homes destroyed later Gordon Campbell still rejects the notion that only if we still had the 'Martins', this nightmare would not have happened.
The damage has put 2010 in jeopardy as refugees swell olympic sites. The provincial government is trying to make the rebuilding project a massive P-3 and the premier, sneaks away to his beloved Hawaii, commenting., "at least I built you RAV!"
Can't happen here? Well they said that in Kelowna.

There is such a thing as transitional leadership...a somewhat neutral "buffer" while things re-group and a more firmed up direction taken, and with that goes a more definable leader.
However, I don't think the NDP is that smart, never was, and hence its downfall and irrelevancy.
People will gravitate to those who are more decisive, show leadership, etc. vs Mr. or Ms. Dithers. Put another way, an adult even with a "DUI" YET with experience still appeals more to the general public VERSUS someone barely with the equivalent of a new drivers' license, aka the devil you know vs the one you really don't.
P.S. Is the Adrian Dix wearing a Carol James suit...or is it vice versa. Anyone got a photo of them together at the same time?

and the alternative to Premier Campbell is what ??
The NDP is clueless when it comes to managing the economy and is just the sock puppet of the BC Fed.
Letting the Fed get control of this province again would result in another 10 years of dismal economic performance, massive increase in the size and intensity of the public service and the ruination of the economy.
No thanks, been there, done that.

I hate to disagree with one of your posteres such as Grunply,on this story, but I will. The Martin Mars is a pretty large aircraft for sure. It does have a few issues. It needs a heck of a long lake to pick up from.Doesn't operate from land, and yes it's old but that's not really a factor. and yes it carries a pretty big load. But slow.
I used to drive water bombers in this province and Alberta 35 years ago. The Mars sat on Sprout lake, in case the lunmber companies needed them. We flew Canso's which could do a pick up and drop in as little as 6 minutes. Two man crew and a heck of a lot less maintenance and of course could do water landings, or from airports. Smaller but much more versatile. Try finding real big lakes in parts of Alberta. My gosh we used to use lakes like Shanigan Lake here in the Victoria area. We also used ex Maritme bombers called P2V'7. Land only. More power than the Mars quicker in and out and could climb out of places a Mars couldn't even dream of going into. The government of the day paid for the contracts while in use, the rest of the year they were in the hanger for overhauls. The Mars is big aircraft and some folks figure the present governemnt should buy them. But why? BC has no government owned water bombers, or flying service. Other provinces have. It's an expensive fleet. I basically loath Cambpell as a lot of folks here seem to do, but buying the Mars would serve no great purpose for the taxpayer dollar. By the way, most of our fleet still does fire supression out of the country. Another bomber is the Canadair amphibian. Real expensive. The choice of the federal government. we could and did out fly them and carried larger loads. I like to see the old Mars lumbering along a long stretch of water and it does carry a large load. never did bother to go find out if it used gelguard, phoscheck , or any other chemical If they don't the load looks impressive but not nearly as good as the ones with chemicals included. Let's not dismiss the present opposition leader. she started with 3 MLA's and now has a pretty effective caucus. Too bad Gordo doesn't like to show up in the house with his assorted visions . Each time he comes up with a new vision, somebody gets hurt.

So maestro, what do you like about Gordon Campbell's government?
Are you fond of what he's done relative to BC resources and assets?
Do you think employing almost 200 people in the news and news spinning business - none of whom have been through a normal open hiring process - is something you want your tax dollars spent on?
Do you like the idea of selling out the generating capacity of our rivers?
Do you think the ship-building industry is growing and increasing it's capacity when BC Ferries gets its ships from Europe?
Do you like paying import taxes on those ferries?
Do you think we should lock step our economy and social programs with Alberta's?
Do you have any idea what foolishness the idea of opening medical schools light in Victoria and Prince George is turning into? And what the additional costs those little boondoggles have created for medical education in this province?
Do you know how many of Gordon's friends are benefiting from his government?
Do you know who makes the decisions for the whole of that government?
Do you think you’re getting value for money?
Are you actually awake?
I've run out of time, someone else can take this up and help you explore things like the treaty negotiations, land settlements, the ALR, highway construction, the Olympics...... the sordid history of P3s,

The biggest laugh was when Campbell told Baldry that he'd like to go back to Africa to help people.
I didn't know that our multinational corporations have their boards of directors sitting in Africa?
Campbell will have a whole slew of directorships and appointed Fellow of The Fraser Institute, joining his idol Weenie Manning.
I don't think the guy is bad, but a total moron, operated by the same boards he'll be sitting on one day.

The following link is not directly related to Campbell, but I thought the flavor of behavior it depicts on the part of "Canada's New Government" is enlightening for those interested in the neo-conservative mindset. It of course raises further questions why the mainstream media here in Canada is uninterested in covering deplorable behavior on the part of "Canada's New Government".

.... Campbell's got scandal swirling all over him. [... Deleted for possible libel (tyee editor)...] the BC rail scandal, the want to sell off BC Ferries with no one in the public knowing, the sale of BC gas to Terasen which is now Morgan Kindle's, owned privately by Goldman Sachs and Carlyle... folks, it took several decades to build up these crowns which you all used to own... until Campbell came along. Now, BC gas is owned by a U.S. multinational monopoly. My, how far we've come with Cambpell.
And why does the media not say a peep? Because 28% of its market share is owned by Canwest for starters and all Canwest does is do the bidding of the empire. The Liberals can do no wrong as long as they continue to sell out to U.S. multinationals. Can't wait for Harpers proposal of the sale of the CBC to Canwest if Harper wins again. The truth once that happens, will never see the light of day. And Canwest can and will do it, folks, they are freshly sitting on 1.1 billion in cash from the sale of an Austrailian TV station.
And Grumpy, I could not agree with you more with your stated cliche. Offer a case against Bush, and the Republicans say the same thing. "Better to deal with the devil you know, instead of the devil you don't." Man, is that kind of thinking looney tunes. And where the hell is Carole James in all this? ... Its all to hard watch. Like your saying what? That laws are never broken, that people don't screw up for their own selfish wants and ego trips? Better think twice, pal. Often it really is someone elses fault, including anyone who voted for this the second time round, never mind the first.
When the next recession hits and the red ink bleeds and the cuts are severe and the corporate tax rates get jacked up and the royalties are increased, you'll blame it all on the party that has to inherit the hangover, of course, turning a blind eye to the golden opportunities missed to pay down debt and save up for the bad times with corporate tax rates that should have been higher in these boon times, along with the royalties and such. And guys like yourself will sit around, watching the next political party inherit the hangover of corruption, making all the tough choices that please no one, all the while blaming the next party for the next recession and spending cuts and raised taxes, saying it was "all their fault" like the hypocrites usually do. Am I far off from this? Sad part is, since I sometimes I agree with you, instead of the idiot Elliots I have absolutely no common ground with whatsover, that I'm likely right. Please make some kind of case that shows me I'm wrong cause guess what, working man. A recession is coming and hard choices will have to be made. What will you be then? Campbell keeps getting re-elected because the "average voter" doesn't have a clue of the issues and makes up his or her mind on the way to the polling station.
If Hitler had been running in the first elections in Germany and Austria after WW2, he would have been re-elected without any question, by starving people creeping out of holes in flattened cities and millions dead.
We had a deadbeat BC Lib MLA, John Wilson here in Cariboo North, elected twice. The first time with a 200 majority, the second with 5,000. The guy disappeared and went to sleeep the minute he was elected and nobody saw him again, apart from the inner circle faithful, for 9 years.
Our former Reform MP, Phillip Mayfield was elected 3 times, I believe, the last time with 52 %. His nickname was the "invisible MP". Nobody ever heard of anything he may have done, or said, for about 12 years.
Now we have another warmed up deadbeat Reform fossil by the name of Dick Marris, elected umpteen times in union towns, sitting on his ass and taking orders for Harpo, without the slightest idea what's going on.
Yes, Campbell does indeed have a good chance for re-election in a BC sold off to and controlled by foreign owners.

About the Martin Mars. Of course they needed a long lake because of the vast volume of water they could carry. This is the point, when water is needed, it is needed in vast volumes.
The 'Mars' always had two camps, those for and those against. Now, as the elderly heritage aircraft are being sent out of the province, (a seperate debate)let us hope we do not need them, as we do not have any of their like.
I think history will look very poorly on Campbell for the loss of such unique aircraft.
The Russians are waking up to the need of large water bombers and have some interesting aircraft. But I think Campbell's opinion is: "If it is not in my backyard, let it burn and to hell with the lot of you!"

Alive: Sunshine, let me tell you a little story. During the millennium Line debate, where Clark and McPhail did their own version of a RAV bait and switch, I was asked to speak at a NDP meeting. As soon as I said that the Millennium Line deal was wrong and that Clark, et al, were wrong, I was booed, heckled and jeered. The people who invited me were threatened and one had his membership in the NDP revoked because he tried to stand up to the Clark and McPhail thugs.
You see, I wasn't surprised that in the next election the NDP won only 2 seats, no not at all!
So old chum, with the NDP, which I voted for since 1975, I will never vote for again, until they change and with Carole (wet noodle) James at the helm, I see no change at all.

Speaking of Liberal tactics, this might be an opportune time to point out a few of those tactics in action.
Since Christmas Day I've been monitoring what's been happening on a couple of pages at Wikipedia. What started as a nominally fair-minded posting of information about Erik Bornmann and his role in the BCRail trial upcoming has turned into a white wash of Erik Bornmann the tyro lawyer and Canadian hero.
Not only has this happened with respect to the Erik Bornmann page at Wikipedia but also at the BC Legislature Raids. A number of ‘contributors’ who’ve never posted a single article or commented on anything of interest, one way or the other, have been busy cutting, deleting, and white washing anything on these pages that doesn’t conform to their version of the truth and labeling the author of those articles (and anyone else they don’t agree with) as indulging in libel and slander. In fact, they’ve gone almost to the point of threatening Wikipedia with legal action. Talk about libel chill, Grumpy – it’s there in spades. And most of it directed at Skookum1 whom all of you know from his many excellent discussions on a wide range of subjects here at Tyee.
If you want further evidence of this please follow this link and explore the edits and the ‘dialogue’ yourselves:

Okay, that does it. Seems to work and takes you to the right place - sorry about the earlier dud. You can follow up any of the contributors by clicking on their names that will take you to their individual Wiki pages. At that point, you'll see why they are single-issue contributors: SPA's in Wiki jargon - who are weighing in with just one purpose in mind and that's not openness and providing the reader with all the information available.

There's no difference between the public and the private troughs. The PPPs are also a fraud, because they all come out of the same pockets.
Even the just reported $38,000 per day salaries of the CEOs are not paid by the corporations, but charged to the public by the corporations.
In the case of the PPPs the projects are also all paid for by the public and at much higher prices and costs than if they'd been tax funded projects.
When will our brainwashed public realize that they're taken to the cleaners with fraudulent words ?

Geez, save time and simply " cut and paste" the same old Leftie rhetoric for similar TYEE stories.
Credibility by certain TYEE posters is often stamped "VOID" ....they can't discern between subjectivity and objectivity.

Dedicated ??? LOL ... dedicated is volunteering and doing it for free... not rolling up to the often -PUBLIC -Trough to the benefit of a select few and playing drunken sailor when in power.
Sorry Stump....I guess the ones you know versus the ones I've seen in action are poles apart. I like Grumpy's take about how he got shite on after the NDP invitation . They often cannabalize their own.
Sometimes one is left to wonder if the TYEE editors place bets with some of these articles and "how much" of the same- old same -old FROM the usual TYEE suspects.
Just because one side of the political spectrum failed to be a viable entity to create balance is not something many of us should shed a tear over. If one wants to turn the TYEE into a Guyana Kool - Aid party, do what most socialists did to Grumpy,ie vote " socialist - deemed non credible dissenters" off the Red Island , and then go bore- each -other- to- death while you comrades all fight for the soapbox.

The head of Home Depot Inc. left the home improvement chain on Wednesday in a mutual agreement, taking with him a severance package worth about $210 million US.
The surprise departure of Bob Nardelli from the role of chief executive officer after six years came amid investor unhappiness over Home Depot's share price performance. Nardelli also stepped down as chairman of the board.
Home Depot chief executive and chairman Bob Nardelli, pictured here, resigned as chairman and chief executive on Jan. 3. The decision was by mutual agreement, the Atlanta-based company said.
(Ric Feld/Associated Press)
Under Nardelli's employment agreement, he will leave the company with a massive severance deal, including a cash payment of $20 million US, the acceleration of unvested deferred stock awards currently worth about $77 million US, and unvested options with an intrinsic value of about $7 million US.
Nardelli has agreed not to compete with the company for one year, not to solicit employees or customers of Home Depot for four years, and other conditions, the company said in a release.
The departure of Nardelli has come just four months after he told the Associated Press that he had no plans to depart.
Nardelli was replaced immediately by Frank Blake, the company's vice-chairman.

Well, agreed, we can agree and disagree ....or agree to disagree etc.. At times these issues can evolve into a semantics/hair - splitting exercise.
Editorially speaking, , the " Socialist -as - dedicated to....etc. etc. " comment just provided me a rather wry grin. I have to go with my own experiences with those who are ,or claim to be, " Socialist " and those who are Non - Socialist or never claimed they were.
I myself find the former more inconsistent in the " preach- versus -practice " than the latter. Yours and others experiences may be different. My view is that " pro - socialism " often serves as some kind of therapy/catharsis. Unfortunately engaging in expanded discussions " ie what about this...what about that..." etc. etc. often pisses off the socialist wannabbees.
A recent conversation with someone who was very familiar with some of the " usual B.C Socialist heroes" simply reiterated my wry grin.
No-one , as you state, should be expected to work for free...but their dedication should far outweigh the remuneration. Public office is primarily to serve the entire public, not benefit a select few combined with self -engorgement.
Re: your " choices" comment...I think there should be a limit to the length of time one can hold office. Otherwise it does create professional politicians. (The political pension issue is another topic).
Society is changing rapidly and thus needs continual transfusions of new blood.

I hate to harp on about the selling of the Mars aircraft, but let's be fairly clear. Yes the Mars needs a long lake due to the water volume it picks up. But how many big lakes are next to a fire? That's one reason so many water bombers are capable of land pickups, and some can do land and water pickups. A couple of cansos, can scoop and deliver really quickly from much smaller water surfaces, and of course go back to land each evening for maintenance. CONAIR uses DC6's, Trackers and (possibly still A26) The size of the fire, location, nearness to airfields are all factors.
The Flying Firemen using the P2V&'s could range farther afield and return quicker than any other bomber with a speed of over 300 knts. Companies are using P3s, C130, and even a DC ten for fire surpession right now south of the border.
The BC government never had a fire suppression fleet, but did have a fleet for moving people around. It was scrapped years ago and it wasn't by the Liberals or Socred. It simply wasn't economical. The next government had a heck of a time selling the fancy sled that Bill Vandezam had bought to fly back east now and again. Your tax dollars at work. The Mars isn't economical either. Let them go. The ones who usually want things to stay the same have never even gotten close to one of them. It isn't just Campbell that is saying No.
I read somewhere that they intend to sell one and keep one somewhere as a museum thing, somewhere in the vicinity of Sprout Lake.
I do remember like yesterday the time one of the Mars crews were killed when some one called a "stop drop" people were in the drop zone and a water drop would have killed them all. The crew simply couldn't fly out of the place they had got themselves into. I think the other guys got a lesson from that tragic event. we sure as hell did.

The stuff in Potvin's article certainly dates to that time - or shortly after. But what the brain posted was more specific and it got erased for possible libel. Still, the 'rumour' has been extant in certain echelons of the 'government' for some time. My opinion on Potvin's revelations is the same as Grumpy's btw.
Point being, I'm surprised that:
1. If it's true, it hasn't come out in the press;
2. If it's not true, that some action hasn't been taken against those who've been spreading the rumour.
Functionally, I don't think it matters - I could care less about the Premier's personal life. By the way, I think you need to look very closely at the Tsawwassen deal. My reading is that the lands which are being severed from the ALR and transferred to the band will - over time - come with fee simple title that can be sold to non-natives. I think it's no accident that the treaties which are currently moving toward completion are all in areas where there is a lot of adjacent industrial opportunity or development potential (ref Powell River, Sechelt, etc). This is not a coincidence and I'd be very surprised if such considerations have not played a big part in the selection of those treaty tables which are moving ahead.
We haven't heard the last of this, my view.

I've got an idea!!! Let's blame the government for our homelessness - despite the fact that there are more (though not as many as promised) social housing units. People need to take responsibility for their own actions...
We had our Company X-Mas party on the 21st of December. After a number of cocktails, I urged a few of my employees to carry the party to Granville street - we had a great time - the Roxy sure hasn't changed since my days!!
I noticed some homeless people, but two things really ticked me off....I heard two raggy looking guys musing about how much warmer Vancouver was in Calgary. One block closer to the Roxy, I heard 3-4 ratty looking kids speaking French.
Not one of these people have contributed a single cent to our province and our community. Yet - they demand we provide them with social housing.
I would like to see some studies done - though I have heard that over 1/2 of the DTES residents aren't even from BC. When you have this happening - of course poverty rates will increase. Most of the poverty occurs with migrants and new immigrants.....if you can't afford to come to Vancouver - please, move somewhere else and allow us to continue to build a great city...

I had to laugh when the provincial government started to crow about how they had signed all the public service contracts and what great negotiators they were, etc. I was involved, to an extent, in some of those negotiations. We were told by the government reps that if we did not agree to/ ratify our new contract, our jobs would be privatized and we could have them back for 9 bucks an hour and our benefits slashed. Funny how I didn't read any of that in the mainstream media. As for the signing bonuses, most folks I work with used it to pay off (part of) the debt they have amassed as they can't live from pay to pay without credit, despite working full time.
By the way, we are the lowest paid of all the public sector workers, i.e, social service workers. After a three year freeze of our wage (which was already abysmally low, we got a forty cent an hour raise.
As for the issue of First Nations, I feel G West hit the nail on the head with his comments, i.e., it being "no accident that the treaties which are currently moving toward completion are all in areas where there is a lot of adjacent industrial opportunity or development potential". I don't think this is a coincidence either, G West, nor does any intelligent person I know. Just ask yourself, what kind of uproar would there have been if the province had tried to unilaterally remove those lands from the ALR. This way, they can feather the nests of their business associates and tax coffers (businesses/ folks on the removed ALR land will no longer be exempt from paying tax under the treaty) and download responsibility for the land decision onto the natives. Why not, they download responsibility for everything else, don't they?
Incidentally, I sent a letter to the Sun to that effect. I'll leave it up to you as to whether or not you think they published it.
Yep, Mr. Campbell is doing a bang-up job, alright.

It is rather strange that some commentators attack the writer of this article because he worked for the NDP gov't back in the 90"s rather than attacking the statements he made. Mr. Schreck has the knowledge to understand the what is contained in the finiancial statements made by the BC Liberals. He dissects their spin and shows us what the numbers really are. None of his detractors have done so.
During the 90's BC was in tough shape due to the asian meltdown and the lose of transfer payments from Ottawa with Liberals pals in control of the federal purse strings. The NDP did very well to keep the province going and when they left office the province had a surplus of $1.5 billion. This was reported by Will Mc Martian on April 20, 2005 in The Tyee.
BC is doing well now due to demands for our natural resources and a strong housing market. The BC Liberals are doing very little to help the economy. The main things they have done is lower the minimium wage to $6.00, reduce regulations so many jobs are less safe (check deaths in the forestry sector) and decrease environmental regulations so more damage can be done in the extraction of natural resources. Campbell and his gang have little to do with the economic "growth" in the province.
His failures mainly go unreported in the Canwest news outlets. Perhaps when the gov't (i.e. us) buys multiple page ads and supplements in the newspapers, they are reluctant to bite the hand that feeds them. remember that Campbell's first meeting when he became Premier was with the head s of Canwest Global.
I believe Keith Richards was a prophet when he summed up Campbell's performance quite nicely when he said, "You can only take credit for being awake at the time."

What I am saying is the opposition needs to be a better opposition and present alternatives that swing voters will want to vote for. That is how elections are won.
And that point is completely lost on the opposition and its supporters in BC.

Why do you think I don't have to do anything but post your mindless drivel back at you El?
All your stuff is personal and ad hominem. The only time you ever actually discuss something and throw mud is when you talk sports.
The point is, you behave like a spoiled child - don't be surprised when I treat you that way because it's exactly the way you behave. If you want a serious discussion you'll show it and start behaving appropriately.
I'm not holding my breath. I know a lot of people from that era who used to love Whistler too - they wouldn't be caught dead there now.

Professional sports as noble? Who should I count as my role models? Michael (I'll take that bet) Jordan? Danny "Pass me a beer, it's thirsty work driving" Heatley? One of the cyclists from the Tour De Masking Agents? Ben Jonson?
High level sports is nothing but a circus to take people's minds off the bread being stolen off their plate.

Meant to also say that from what I see, mostsports are a competition to see who can cheat the most and not get caught. I would never encourage my child to take such an attitude or play a game that way.

Just tune in to sports talk, put your feet up and shut off your brain - I think you're losing control.

Like G West, I'd like to read where it's been published that "...his wife has reportedly separated from him and has reverted to using her maiden name. Campbell now lives alone..." (quote from the linked May 2005 Republic article"
SLP. I didn't see the link in your posting. Wonder why? I just googled Lara Dauphinee and read the article you referred to. Interesting comments about the "made man" aspect at the end of the article.

I'd say that Kitimat should be the Flagship town of the People's Peace Movement!
Kitimat just showed the rest of US that WE as a movement together can take on these Alcan't etal greedy corrupt corporations and Win!
I/WE should be sending the mayor and brave citizens of Kitimat a letter of support as they are not alone in taking on gordo and his cowardly stooges selling US British Columbians out .
Just an idea.

It's not your fault. The software is rusty. You have to type each of the HTML tags in manually. Or cut and paste them around the text you want to emphasize. The current messed up program spits out different, but all unwanted and extraneous messages like the one that surprised you.
The quoted item from Grumpy was from a Kevin Potvin article in the Republic of East Vancouver. The rumour was a riff on that which got mentioned up thread by the brain and was subsequently removed as possible libel. I suspect you can determine why. As I said earlier, I haven't been able to confirm that it is anything but a rumour. The fundamentals about someone who works in the Premier's office and what her title is are all matters of public record.

I just posted a Paul Willcocks article from the Times Colonist on the Alcan thread. Does that count as mainstream?

acadian driftwood. Maybe you should read the article in question yourself. Not hard to find, just follow the same approach I did. One of the main points of the article deals with the manner in which the mainstream media has dealt with this issue. That is to say complete silence. I'm not one to castigate and condem based on inuendo but I feel these rumours, as they are, should be addressed by the media and put to rest, if possible, by the premier's office.

well said acadian. it's only the extreme lefties and the professional protesters/welfare recipients that don't acknowledge how well this province is being run right now. i started following b.c. politics in 1972, when i was young and naive and campaigning for dave barrett's socialist horde. this is the quietest time we've had since then b/c people are satisfied with this gov't and are willing to accept their few gaffs in consideration of their many successes.

acadian driftwood, Ell-idot, you two are so brain dead about what Gordo (is he a made man) is doing to this OUR Province of British Columbia!
He's involved in the biggest dirty scandal ever to hit BC. The BC Legislature Raids 28-12-2003 backed up for three years by CanWest’s conspiracy of silence! How are WE the People of BC able to know what the hell is going on?
Canceling the fall legislature sitting because in his words “It was busy work†who does this guy think he is?
Two days ago in the little town of Kitimat with 11,000 citizens beat Gordo and Alcan with the help of an NGO put there to protect citizens rights.
Way to go Kitimat!
Campbell should be stripped of his PREIMER title and brought up on criminal charges/treason against the people of British Columbia! Alcan and Campbell?
What was gordo promised in exchange?

Back to the sports pages El, you're still young and naive. You need to get out more, people are NOT happy with this government. Not that they're pleased with the opposition either for that matter, but that's beside the point.

The only way to prevent extreme right wing parties from governing is to bring on a middle of the road party. Gordon Campbell recognized this in the early 90's. This is why he joined the up and coming Liberal party. He was able to turn the party into something farther to the right than the Socreds ever were, and at the same time eliminate any meaningful future opposition. As a result, 60 % of our population is voting for the lesser of two evils. We are paying dearly for his lack of morals.
acadian driftwood

blame the sinking of the North on the b.c. marine ferry union (or whatever they're called). they let a junior watch officer alone on the bridge with his girlfriend/helmswoman. Blaming Hahn doesn't cut the mustard.
Elliot

you're about as cliche-riden as they come bc clown. you're also very boring. sounds to me like you're probably one of those professional protesters who think the gov't owe them everything. there's no shortage of aholes like that in this province.

Absolutely right ac. The guilty party is the man responsible for turning the government, and a lot of public institutions, from accountable bodies, into private cults - about which the public and the taxpayer no longer has any right to know.
Just like his government.
Just like Gordon.
Elliot

as for the sinking of the ferry; blaming it david hahn is hilarious. the two crew members were getting jiggy with it on the bridge, and the coverup is being executed by the ferries union, which, by the way, is probably the most antiquated in the province. or perhaps they're tied for that honour with the bctf.
DPL

Arcadian driftwood says the two were left on the bridge alone. If the officer was qualified and the next most senior guy just went for lunch I guess it's up to the Canadian Safty board to decide if that was OK, not arcadian drifwood or any other poster. If the bridge folks were not trained on new equipment that will come ouit as well. But I thought we don't run BC Ferries anymore, so how come the story drifted there if the thread was supposed to the Premier having a bad year? Or are you bored with the story and have decided to slag a few woking people?
G West

More ad hominem insults. You're not growing up very fast El. How old were you in 1972?
Even managed to drag in the BCTF - but I noticed you ignored the fact that this is now a private corporation and the public no longer has any 'right' to know what's actually going on. We may hear something from the safety board; we won't hear anything from the Premier - the Province's self-appointed CEO and we no longer have any right to expect anything but spin from Hahn. That's the way things this 'government' likes it.
It might interfere with their marketing plan. You CAN ask Davey Hahn about that EL.
Back to the Sports Page - you're still spinning your wheels.
