Nanaimo Farmers Market

Nanaimo, October 2007.

In October 2007, I paid a visit to the community of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. With a population of 80,000, it came as a surprise to discover that the city does not maintain a functioning farmers' market where food is the focus.

The Food Sustainability Sub-Committee of the Mid-Island Co-op recognized the absence of a market as a significant threat to the already vulnerable state of Vancouver Island agriculture.

Listen to this:

In response, they organized a one-day Farmers' Showcase. The event acted as a trial farmers' market to determine the feasibility of such an event on a weekly basis.

With over 3,000 people swarming upon the farmers and producers, the success of the market was a clear sign of the healthy potential for an increase in local food production on Vancouver Island.

    Farmer's markets

Always preferred over the big box stores. Plus its a great place to go when you visit a community you don't know well and you want to get a sense of the place.

And of course its a great outlet for getting local produce.

The only surprise is that Nanaimo didn't already have one.

but..nanaimos got a really great music scene..maybe they`re just getting caught up on the farmers market..a great music store "Fascinatin` Rhythm" new and used on the main drag downtown..picked up Bill Evans Portrait album for 9 bucks..coming out..across the street in this little plaza area ..it was a clear winters day was this very beautiful woman in a long black coat and bright red scarf really givin` it to her violin..long hair tousled and blown every which way...I was drawn like a magnet...nobody else there..not a soul around and she was really into it..the sound was gorgeous and really carried ..really grabbed ya.. she was good...I emptied my change into her violin case...she said "Thankyou"
I said " What is that you`re playing"
She laughed " Vivaldi...Winter! Still laughing as a ray of sun illuminated a cloud that winter gold just behind her head"
"Perfect" I replied as I rode the amazing
sound of Vivaldi on up the deserted street.
