Defeated NDP MP Says Liberals' Electoral Reform Promise 'Set Up to Fail'

Submitted by Tyee staff, 30 Oct 2015

Outgoing NDP MP Craig Scott, who was defeated in Jack Layton's old Toronto riding on Oct. 19, lamented the Liberals' electoral reform promise may be "set up to fail" on CBC's Power and Politics this week.

He argued there's been confusion over the party's promise to change Canada's first-past-the-post system by next election. He notes the party has set out to consider a wide range of electoral reforms -- many of them not proportional -- including mandatory voting and even online voting.

Jeff Sellot recently guessed Justin Trudeau would eventually settle on an "instant runoff" scheme, a system used in the 2013 Liberal leadership race. Scott voices his frustration with the prospect of another winner-take-all voting system like instant runoff.

"I'm not going to say it's dead," Scott said of proportional representation. "But it's got a tough road."
