Three weeks ago, The Tyee launched our latest experiment in crowdfunded journalism. With the B.C. election on the horizon for May 2017, we wanted to get started right away with some important election-related deep research projects.
We are thrilled to report that as of the campaign deadline at midnight on Monday, Dec. 12, nearly 1,000 Tyee Builders had contributed $60,000 towards this project.
Our initial goal was $50,000, which we hit far ahead of schedule. After that, we decided to go for a stretch goal of $65,000 and use the extra $15,000 to pay for things like travel expenses and video work. Although we didn’t hit our final stretch goal, the extra $10,000 will go a long way in The Tyee’s small and nimble newsroom.
Now that we have the funding in place, our team is raring to get started on our pre-election reporting projects. As promised, this will include an investigation into connections between powerful political players in B.C, and a series of in-depth articles that will give background to some of the most important issues to the Tyee Builder community.
If you gave to the campaign, watch your inbox for an email from us that will include a link to a poll where you can rank some potential story ideas in order of your interest. Our editorial team will take direction from the results as they plan their work in the coming months.
From everyone at The Tyee, thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the campaign, shared it with their networks, and sent messages of support. We are continually humbled by the enthusiasm of the Tyee community and your willingness to join us for projects like this.
Onward!
The campaign deadline has now passed. However, if you would still like to contribute to this project, you are welcome to. Go to https://support.thetyee.ca.
