Tyee Election Reporting Fund Passes Target with Days to Go

There's still time to join us before midnight on April 13.

We at The Tyee are humbled. Gobsmacked, even. With four days left in our campaign to raise the $50,000 needed to fund federal election reporting, Tyee readers pulled together and shot us past our goal. We want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who gave, helped spread the word, and offered encouragement.

Just yesterday morning, we still had over $12,000 to raise. A challenge, sure, but achievable within a few days. And then founding editor David Beers published a personal appeal asking to directly fund the work of award-winning reporter Andrew Nikiforuk.

In less than 12 hours, The Tyee community pledged $12,000 and more. For us, that is a big, big deal.

We knew Tyee readers appreciate the work of Andrew Nikiforuk, but we didn't realize just how much. The response shows Tyee readers across Canada are hungry for more ferocious, unmuzzled reporting in the lead-up to this election.

So what now? When we planned this campaign, we chose the $50,000 goal based on what was needed to cover the election with our small, nimble team. The more we raise beyond that target, the more fearless reporting we can do. Imagine what we can do with $75,000.

There is still time on the clock -- join us now and help us reach $75,000 by our deadline at midnight on Monday, April 13.

Thanks to Tyee readers who pitched in yesterday, Andrew Nikiforuk has essential resources needed to cover the state of our democracy and our government's record.

But there are so many more reasons to support Tyee's election reporting, like Jeremy Nuttall's national muckraking and Geoff Dembicki's leading-edge series on the new economy. Or how about Heiltsuk Nation community organizer Jess Housty's commentary on missing and murdered aboriginal women, Katie Hyslop's humanizing work on inequality, and Andrew MacLeod's shrewd reporting on the inner workings of government?

The Tyee isn't afraid to publish pieces that poke the powerful and privileged right in the metaphorical eye. In fact, we aim for that. And based on the response to our appeal to fund Andrew Nikiforuk's work, Tyee readers want it, too.

We contacted Andrew Nikiforuk with the good news yesterday as the contributions rolled in. "I'm overwhelmed by the response and now I'm all geared up for this pivotal election," he told us. "My deepest gratitude to Tyee readers as well as The Tyee's hard-working editorial team. Together we can make a difference."

Help us make even more of a difference this election -- contribute now as a Tyee Builder. [Tyee]
