The federal government has severely cut the CBC budget.
Canada's giant telecom companies, which in many cases compete with the CBC, want more cuts to local programs.
Some of those same companies are lobbying regulators to shut down CBC's new online music service, CBCmusic.
The CBC itself is in the process of conducting a major strategic review both internally and through outside regulators.
Who's missing from this conversation about the future of our taxpayer-funded public broadcaster?
That's right. You. The taxpaying public.
OpenMedia.ca and LeadNow.ca, supported by Vancity Credit Union, are trying to change this. They're convening a national brainstorming exercise about the future of the CBC to make sure your opinions are heard.
To that end, they, along with GenWhy Media, a supporting partner, are hosting a live celebration to honour the CBC past, discuss the present, and brainstorm the future.
It happens Monday at 7 p.m. in Vancouver at The Vogue Theatre.
If you can't make it, join us right here on this page for the live video stream, above.
Feeling fired up already?
Head to the Reimagine CBC website to submit your ideas.
They'll take those and:
"...Bring the best ideas to the CBC, and together we'll work with decision-makers to turn your ideas into reality. More specifically, we will use the ideas and other input from Canadians to put together a crowdsourced set of recommendations that we will submit to both the CBC and regulators at the CRTC."
Ideas will be judged on three criteria:
- How can the CBC be more interactive, accountable and community-based?
- How can the CBC play a role in ushering us into a new age of participation?
- How can the CBC become a launch pad for a new era of citizen-powered culture, innovation, creativity and collaboration? What criteria are they using?
