[Editor's note: Given the strong field of applicants, our judges asked to expand the number of fellowship this round from four to five, adding one more. Thanks to all who generously donated to the fund, we can accomodate this, and so we have added a final, fifth name, David Tracy, to the list announced Friday, Feb. 22.]

We are pleased to announce five new recipients of Tyee fellowships for investigative and solutions-oriented reporting. They are:

Amanda Euringer, whose proposal focuses on workplace safety.

Chris Smith, who will explore ways to fairly and efficiently achieve sustainability.

Nick Smith, who will write about education reform.

David Tracy, who will dig into local agriculture.

Jacqueline Windh, who will report on challenges facing native youth.

The independent panel that makes the fellowship selections had to pare more than 50 strong entries down to five.

"I was very pleased to see the depth, range and passion offered by both seasoned journalists and newcomers," said panel member Vivian Smith, a veteran newspaper and magazine reporter and editor, and writing instructor at Royal Roads University.

"So many of the proposals were promising, insightful or bold that our job was extremely difficult," added panelist Ross Howard, also a veteran reporter, and an instructor in Langara College's journalism program. "We're confident the fellowship winners should produce the outstanding journalism for which The Tyee is recognized."

We very much appreciate the effort all our applicants poured into their proposals. Be assured that the contents of the proposals that didn't win will remain confidential and are not shared with Tyee editors, staff or anyone else beyond the three judges who make up our independent advisory panel. If you didn't receive a fellowship this year, please don't be discouraged. We will aim to invite applications again next fall.

Our thanks go to all who have donated to the Tyee's fellowship funds. We had a successful drive this year, and that means this initiative is on solid footing to generate important journalism about B.C. that you might not otherwise find in other media.
