We are closing in on our Tyee Fellowships fundraising goal of $10,000 in contributions from our readers -- which will become $20,000 thanks to matching donors.

By our most recent count, we stand just over $7500 from readers -- to whom we say thank you!

Most of those contributions have come in amounts of $100 or $200. We're very gratified to see such broad support for this project. We think it's a powerful and hopeful sign that so many people want to fund the kind of in-depth independent journalism the Fellowships provide.

And if you haven't yet contributed, please help give us a push to get us over the top this final week. You can make a secure online donation here, or to learn about 'offline' ways to donate, click here.

Remember, your donation is tax deductible; you will receive a receipt. We share your info with no one. And you have a chance to win a cool jorg&olif city bike or other great prizes.

The true winners are the citizens of British Columbia, who benefit from the powerful journalism funded by the Tyee Fellowships for Investigative and Solutions-oriented reporting. Past Fellowship winners have made real impacts with stellar series on global warming in B.C.; First Nations reconciliation; and making public transit free of charge to riders.

All applications are judged by an independent, blue ribbon panel. The Tyee publishes the winners' projects, and shares the series with other publications, with authors' permission.

Which reminds me. All journalists thinking of applying for a $5000 Tyee fellowship this year . . . hurry up! The deadline is Dec. 15, just five days away. This will tell you how to apply for a Tyee Fellowship.

Our aim in the new year is to grant four $5,000 Tyee Fellowships to independent reporters tackling important stories. To do that, we need a few thousand more dollars, another wave of good will from the Tyee community.

Sensing your support, I feel confident we can get there. Thanks in advance for this success story in the making.

HOW IT WORKS

All online donations of $10 or more will receive an automatic charitable tax receipt by e-mail. If you would like to learn about other ways to donate, please visit our site: http://thetyee.ca/About/Donate/.

The two funds are held at and managed by Tides Canada Foundation, a national public foundation that guarantees your tax deductible, charitable donation goes directly to supporting individual journalists.

Donate $50 or more by Dec. 19 and you'll be entered into a draw for one of 10 Tyee tote bags filled with books from Harper Collins Canada and New Society Publishers and coffee and tea from Ethical Bean.

Donate $100 or more by Dec. 19 and you'll also be entered into a draw to win an "affordably cool" jorg&olif Scout citybike.

Is $50 or $100 more than you can do today? We'd greatly appreciate any amount you can give -- every bit helps! [Tyee]
