Vancouver International Film Festival starts soon!

The 32nd season of VIFF is upon us. Get ready for 340 films from over 70 countries on 9 screens, including more than 80 non-fiction features covering a broad range of timely topics we know Tyee readers will sink their teeth into.

Whether you go to the movies to be moved, enlightened or entertained, VIFF is your chance to explore new worlds. Shorts, indies, major blockbusters and documentaries: there's something for every kind of film fan.

The Festival runs from September 26 through October 11.

The opening night gala will screen Alexander Payne's Nebraska, for which Bruce Dern recently took home the Best Actor award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

Other hotly anticipated films include Ben Ratner's Down River, a BC Spotlight gala feature, and Gia Milani's All the Wrong Reasons, staring the late Cory Monteith, as the opener for the Canadian Images program.

Our pick? We know our readers are interested in documentaries, politics, social justice and international issues, so we chose Dan Krauss' The Kill Team, winner of the Best Documentary award at Tribeca this year. This true-life horror story of crime, human rights violations, war and espionage hits home in its timely release following the Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning whistle-blowing scandals of this summer.
