What Would You Save First If You Had to Evacuate Your Home?

Climate disasters are becoming more frequent and severe as climate change progresses.

The idea of having to evacuate your home is disconcerting for any amount of time. Not knowing when you’ll be able to return makes it worse.

A recent Tyee report — part of a special series in collaboration with the Climate Disaster Project — found evacuated communities are being displaced for increasing amounts of time, and support and safety nets are not expanding accordingly.

While items like a wallet and phone are largely considered essential, everyone has different things that hold a special place in their heart — an old family photo, a handmade gift from a friend, or a personalized magnet from a vacation. With this in mind, we want to ask:

What special possession would you save first if you had to evacuate your home?
