Tyee Poll: What Do You Think Needs to Be Done to Help Fix the Overdose Crisis?

In June in B.C., there were 175 overdose deaths — 15 times more than from COVID-19.

Disruption to cross-border supply chains; more people using alone amid social distancing measures and visitor building restrictions; and limited access to health supports have contributed to the overdose crisis during the pandemic.

Provinicial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry called for the decriminalization of drugs long before the onset of COVID-19 and safe supply was implemented in B.C. to mediate toxic supply in March. But many are still using street drugs due to issues of accessibility, and stigmatization continues.

While the B.C. government agrees it is a problem, Premier John Horgan has said there are provincial limitations on what can be done. In many ways, COVID-19 is being handled as a public health emergency while the overdose crisis is not.

With this in mind, we wanted to ask: What do you think needs to be done to help fix the overdose crisis?
