Tyee Poll: Canadians, What Are Your Trump Worries?

Donald Trump will soon become the president next door, and Canadians are already worried about what that means for our nation.

There are the issues of trade and the economy: Trump vowed on the campaign trail to rewrtie the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). We send 75 per cent of our exports to the U.S.

There’s the issue of the environment: Trump has called climate change a Chinese hoax (a claim that China rejected). Canada’s government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes in climate change. Trump has already announced that in his first 100 days he intends to cancel billions in payments to United Nations climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure.

There’s the issue of foreign policy: Trump called NATO obsolete and criticized other members as “freeloaders” during his campaign. Amid fears that Trump would tear NATO apart, Obama has said the new administration would remain committed to the alliance, with no word yet from Trump.

There’s the issue of Trump-like leaders: Conservative leadership candidate and MP Kellie Leitch congratulated Trump on his victory and said he had an “exciting message” for Canada. Leitch recently lost high-profile supporters over her proposal to screen visitors, refugees and immigrants for “Canadian values.” Fellow Conservative leadership Chris Alexander claimed Leitch is importing anti-immigrant rhetoric for “crass political purposes.”

There’s been no shortage of analysis here at the Tyee.

But we’d like to hear your thoughts.
