The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Worker killed at Canada Place identified

The construction worker who fell Thursday at the Canada Place roof replacement site and died Saturday was identified by his employer as 30-year-old Diego Herrera.

Herrera worked for RBG USA, a Houston, Texas-based subcontractor to Birdair of Buffalo, N.Y. RBG is a major offshore oil rig contractor, but the company’s website also says it specializes in fabric maintenance, fabrication, scaffolding and rope access.

“We are working with the main site contractor to fully investigate the incident,” RBG USA vice-president Dwayne Witter told QMI.

Witter would not confirm whether Herrera was a United States citizen or discuss what his task was at Canada Place. He referred further questions about Herrera to the RBG corporate headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland.

During a July 21 construction site tour, a 24 Hours reporter observed several Spanish-speaking workers.

Herrera’s death happened about 20 minutes after Dan Martens, 28, died in an unrelated construction incident at Three Harbour Green. Ledcor Group is the construction manager for both Three Harbour Green and Canada Place. WorkSafeBC is investigating both incidents.

The $21 million project to replace Canada Place’s iconic fabric five sails is part of the taxpayer-funded $16 billion federal infrastructure stimulus. Project completion deadlines were coincidentally extended on Thursday from March 31, 2011 to Oct. 31, 2011.
