The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

BC Liberal leadership field likely to narrow further

Parksville Mayor Ed Mayne will announce a "significant campaign decision" tomorrow morning in Victoria, according to a statement from his campaign.

"He's got enough support to make a difference in this campaign," said Paula Peterson, who is managing his campaign.

Perhaps coincidentally, the announcement will be made in the same room at the Hotel Grand Pacific where Moira Stilwell today announced she is dropping out of the race to support George Abbott.

Mike de Jong today said he is staying in the race, though he is getting lots of calls from the other teams seeking support. Liberal members will have to pick at least a top two choices when they vote on Feb. 26. "I seem to be the hottest ticket in town these days," he said.

"I think it remains a race that is too close to call," he said. "It's still anyone's ballgame and I think that's why you're seeing all this maneuvering."

Christy Clark and Kevin Falcon are considered frontrunners in the race.
