The Tyee Loves Canadian Literature

The Tyee Loves Canadian Literature

In April 2012, The Tyee launched the Tyee Builder program to make our independent journalism more sustainable and to increase our coverage while staying independent, feisty, and free. With the support of a few dozen Canadian literary greats and their publishers, we were able to raise thousands of dollars. In just two weeks, over 450 Tyee readers signed up to help "build" The Tyee, pledging between $5 and $100 a month to enable our writers and editors to publish more great journalism.

Below, you'll find information about the publishers that helped make the Tyee Builder fundraiser such a success. Scroll down to learn more.

Mother Tongue Publishing

Mother Tongue Publishing

Mother Tongue Publishing is a private literary press located on Salt Spring Island, BC. Since their early 1990s beginnings as a private press and publisher of literary periodicals, broadsides, and limited edition chapbooks of Canadian poetry, they have grown to incorporate trade publishing into their mandate. They're dedicated to publishing "unique, bold, and stimulating books on British Columbia," which explains why their list includes work by one of our favourite authors, Gurjinder Basran. In April of 2012, Mother Tongue generously donated several copies of Basran's work to help us promote our Tyee Builder program.

They've grown to include publishing operations worldwide, and have produced the work of some of our favourite authors, including Lawrence Martin, Joseph Boyden, Linda McQuaig, and Joel Bakan. They're also republishing the work of BC Book Prize winner, Gurjinder Basran, in Spring 2012.

In support of The Tyee Builder fundraiser, Penguin provided copies of books by several of their talented authors, including:

The accolades accumulated by Random House of Canada books are many, and include The Man Booker Prize, the Governor General's Literary Awards, the Giller Prize, Pulitzer Prizes, and many other. They haven't let success go to their heads, though; to support their authors and independent media in Canada, Random House was kind enough to provide The Tyee with copies of:
