I see and feel the world differently through my bike. Crossing the Lions Gate Bridge on the way home from work, I stop for a moment. The sun glistens on the water and warms my face. The bike is old and covered with city grime, but to me, it is a thing of beauty. Through its frame, and the railings of the bridge, I take in the day and am awed by my privileged view.

My absolute favourite part of my ride to and from work is going down those hills! The one thing many people don't know about me is my need for speed. Whizzing down those slopes with the wind in my face is enough to recharge me after any hard day.

I discovered a funny thing after I started to bike regularly to and from work... most people say they are scared of traffic and that's why they don't cycle. Well, I've got news, it's not the traffic, it's the squirrels!!!! They don't hear you coming and they saunter across the street. When you come upon them they freak out and don't know which way to run, and you don't know which direction to turn in order to dodge them! It's the squirrels I tell ya!

I love doing my body and my planet good by using pedal-power. I love feeling the seasons change around me -- I even love the rain on my face! But one word describes it all: FREEDOM. Freedom to go by my time -- never at the mercy of gridlock or bus schedules. Freedom to bike at the pace of my mood -- be it fast and furious or slow and peaceful. Freedom to live a fuller, more connected life (and look good while doing so)!

I recently took my culinary arts students to Hazelmere Organic Farm. Gary King asked us to stand and listen. We heard four varieties of birds; it was the perfect example of communing with nature. That's why I love my daily commute to Richmond. I get to listen, observe, move, breathe... live!

It's a scramble to get to work on time. Cycling to work is my favorite mode for commuting to work, and it's the highlight of my day. It is faster than car or bus, as they are held up in congested traffic. Nonetheless, sometimes I get distracted by a roving peloton -- that's a cyclist's idea of rush hour.

I've been cycling home from work because I like the exercise, stress relief and greenery. Mornings I always took the bus; when considering cycling all the way, I felt like Sisyphus. Last week, I tried it. Now I understand why Camus said to imagine Sisyphus as a happy human being!
