In the Skeena River watershed, youth in B.C.’s northwest are learning to connect with the water, from safety to river skills to environmental awareness.
This is the Youth on Water program, run by the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition since 2009. You might remember it from our education and youth reporter Katie Hyslop’s work to document “Voices from the Future”, with the help of Tyee reader funding.
“I grew up on the river. I did lots of fishing,” said one youth. But it wasn’t until that he joined the program that he tried “actually jumping into the current, swimming in it, just being comfortable and feeling so at peace in the water.”
Jump into the Skeena yourself with this action-packed video from Youth on Water.
