The news coming from Attawapiskat, a remote Northern Ontario reserve struggling with high unemployment and suicide rates -- due in no small part to inadequate government funding -- is rarely good. But the young people of Attawapiskat know there's more to their story than the headlines say.
At the request of students from the community's Vezina High School, national charity DAREarts brought educators, artists, and Juno-nominated musician Glenn Marais into Attawapiskat to work with the students to show the rest of Canada what Attawapiskat is really like. Over three weeks young First Nations students wrote and recorded their song, Walking for Peace, and then shot and edited the music video. Walking for Peace was released today, National Aboriginal Day.
