At dawn on Wednesday, May 18, Vancouver had its own taste of "kayaktivism" when after half a dozen "kayaktivists" interrupted the transit of a giant oil tanker attempting to dock at Kinder Morgan's terminal.
This brand of waterborne activism went viral in Seattle in 2015. When Royal Dutch Shell proposed to lease a terminal in the Port of Seattle for its Arctic drilling fleet, activists decided to physically block the company's Arctic drilling rigs from docking by taking to kayaks. Thus, the "ShellNo Floatilla" protest was born.
Seattle activists organized kayak training for those interested in joining their fleet. Vancouver activists from Greenpeace Canada and 350.org did the same a week before they interrupted the Kinder Morgan tanker.
This video by Seattle doctor and video enthusiast Andrew Elizaga shows what it was like for a fleet of kayaks to stand up to Shell's drilling rigs in Elliot Bay.
