Tyee housing reporter David Ball explored the lasting effects of UN-Habitat's first conference, dubbed Habitat I, in Vancouver in 1976. Politicians, housing advocates, and ordinary citizens came together to discuss questions of homes and city planning. Some called the gathering "radical" for its time, addressing issues of inequality.
Habitat II was held 20 years later in Istanbul. And now, another 20 years later, Habitat III will be held this fall in Ecuador.
UN-Habitat's goal is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities with adequate housing for all. Their "Paper City" video shows elements of what they consider a healthy city.
The video features stop-motion animation and shows how restrictive urban planning -- zoning chunks of land for specific uses -- can cause urban sprawl. In contrast, mixed-use zones foster walkability, a mix of housing types, and areas where residents of different incomes live together.
