April 4 is Refugee Rights Day, and the Vancouver Public Library is planning a double feature of films to educate locals on some of our new neighbours from Syria.
The clip featured here is from Salam Neighbor. Filmmakers Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple are the first filmmakers allowed to be registered and given a tent inside a refugee camp in Jordan. The film provides an intimate look at the lives of 85,000 Syrians at the makeshift town, a mere seven miles away from the warzone.
Characters include a woman overcoming personal loss and cultural barriers and a street smart 10-year-old with trauma hidden behind his constant smile.
The other film, Not Who We Are, features women from Syria seeking refuge in Lebanon. Five characters share the female refugee journey as well as their experiences of displacement, loss and resilience.
