Victoria-born Lliam Hildebrand loves the environment. So when he got a job as a boilermaker in the controversial oil sands, he felt conflicted.
"There's no work in Victoria," said Hildebrand, "and so I go to Alberta, and the only jobs available in Alberta are in the oil and gas sector."
This original Tyee video by Mychaylo Prystupa shows Hildebrand's vision to train laid-off oil sands workers for a growing renewable energy industry through his new non-profit, Iron and Earth. He hopes it will give workers a chance to transition their skills and an option to work in a sector other than oil and gas.
"My dream is that one day I'll be able to go to my union hall, and have a renewable energy job," he said.
