"River Wide" is a short documentary on the Skeena River -- located on B.C.'s north coast -- and its importance as B.C.'s richest salmon grounds.
Energy companies want to bring a liquefied natural gas export facility to the mouth of the river. One interviewee calls it the "worst possible spot" for an LNG project due to the vibrant wildlife in the region.
The project is proposed by Pacific NorthWest LNG and backed by Malaysia's state-owned oil company Petronas. Valued at $36 billion and estimated to create 4,500 construction jobs, it's the province's largest ever private-sector investment. A number of First Nations groups and scientists have voiced their opposition to the project.
For Gerald Deeter, the river's importance isn't something you can put a price on. Deeter visited the river from Germany in the 1980s and caught a 70-pound chinook. But after he went back home...
"My dream was Canada, Canada, Canada," he said. So he sold his house, his business and moved by the river.
Other fishers like Deeter share their stories in "River Wide." This short doc is produced by brand agency Arbiter Creative. Many staff are fishers and wanted to visit the area to capture what's at stake.
