The market for blubber and seal pelts is not what it was historically, but since 1996, governments in Ottawa and St. John's have contributed over $50 million toward subsidies and trade junkets for sealing.
Hunters say the practice will always remain a sustainable part of the economy.* But critics are frustrated with suffering seals and tax dollars going toward what they believe is a dying industry. On the other side of the Atlantic, the EU has banned all seal products.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) launched a recent petition asking the feds to help sealers transition to other employment. This accompanying video illustrates that ask along with the history of sealing on the East Coast.
