Vancouver filmmaker Neil Vokey presents the trailer to his new film Goodwin's Way, which traces the history of one B.C. town's relationship with coal, early 20th century labour battles, and the story the life and mysterious death of one notorious man -- Ginger Goodwin.
Goodwin's experiences in the bitter 1912-14 Vancouver Island Coal Miner's Strike shaped him into an outspoken activist and leader in B.C.'s rebellious early labour movement. He fought for the eight-hour workday at the height of the First World War, and boldly opposed the conscription of his fellow workers.
"I believe this community's approach to be an inspirational one," writes Vokey, "Goodwin's Way demonstrates how Cumberland has overcome the shadows of its past, and used it as a renewable resource to challenge outside interests that want to continue old patterns of exploitation.
Neil Vokey is an emerging filmmaker inspired by alternative histories, philosophies, and lifestyles, driven by the belief that storytelling can foster critical thinking, and compassion. Vokey is crowdfunding for final editing here if you'd like to help him out.
