We've Done Some Re-tooling

Now you can do more with our stories.

Tyee social media tools

Pssst. Pass us on.

It just got easier to have your way with Tyee articles. We've installed some new tools that make it simpler to share your favourite articles with your friends and wired social circles.

Say, for example, you read an article you think your local member of parliament would really enjoy, like maybe last week's piece on the growing homelessness problem in Victoria. Simply click the "email" button at the top of the article, or at the bottom of the piece in the yellow banner under the author bio, and use the form to send the article to as many MPs as you see fit. Simply separate their addresses with a semi-colon.

If you think the story would appeal to a broader audience, you might choose to post it to a social networking site like Reddit, Digg, Stumbleupon or Delicious. Simply click the "share" button at the top of the article, or choose the site you want at the bottom of the piece in the yellow banner under the author bio. And if you've got a Facebook account (where we're sure you're careful not to disclose too much personal information), click the Facebook link to post the article directly to your page for your friends to peruse.

Tyee's e-zine: home delivery

Finally, our new e-newsletter sign-up form at the bottom of each article makes it top of mind to sign up for our free daily or weekly headlines every time you read a story. Of course, if you prefer to use an RSS feed, the link is right there too.

So please tool around, and let us know what you think. If you've got any feedback about the new tools, post a comment after this story. And feel free to forward this to your favourite MPs so they can do the same. [Tyee]

    Something else worth mentionning

First congrats for making it easier to spread the excellent Tyee content.

I noted that a bunch of icons right click now provide the description of the item in French as well. That is a very nice enhancement for those of us that prefer to spread media content somewhat aware of the native language of the sender and/or receiver of the content. Of course in most cases we very well know what it means already (since every francophones living outside of Quebec is just about 100% bilingual), but the respect that it demonstrates toward one of the nation that built up Canada is most meaningful and welcome.

I still look forward to see Tyee content better linked to other content produced in la langue de Molière, as a starter. Your francophile "readers" may also appreciate such language openess. It's no longer a single language world anymore. N'est-ce pas?

PS BTW, l'accent in Molière might have generated "Missed mangled character in posting". Hehe.

    Ooopsie

My Foxtrot browser configuration is actually providing me with this new translation feature. Nonetheless l'esprit du message still stands: shouldn't a media better interoperate with other languages out there if it really wants its content further disseminated (the other official langue of this country being a starter)?

I would actually like to see

I would actually like to see a note added onto the email form that reminds me to use a semi-colon when emailing to multiple parties. As you know... some sites do and some don't and I really can't be asked to remember each sites preferences...

    thanks

    Great idea - thanks.

Also, (I always forget to mention it)... much appreciated is the "Reported Elsewhere" sidebar listing of news articles. There are some really interesting finds there, often ones that are relevant to Tyee articles. Well done.

Linking Directly to Specific Comments Like theglobeandmail.com

At the end of each reader comment on theglobeandmail.com there's a button that can be used to link to the specific comment. This is a useful feature when replying to another comment or e-mailing a link to a particularly interesting comment so that it can be seen in context or for linking to one of your own earlier comments instead of repeating the same material.

For the software types, linking to an earlier comment of your own is like calling a subroutine instead of repeating the same code.

It would be great to provide the same feature on thetyee.ca.

This can already be done manually on thetyee.ca by clicking on VIEW then SOURCE then finding the comment number above the comment of interest, then adding a # plus the comment number to the end of the article URL. But that's pretty tedious. The theglobeandmail.com one-click approach is far more practical.

    I might be biased...

But I think it looks great and works like a charm.

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone!

Cycling Commuter: The ability to bookmark a particular comment is a great idea. Thanks for giving us the Globe example. We'll keep that in mind as we plan for upcoming changes.

DPL: I agree, a built in spell checker would be handy. Are you aware that Firefox 2 has a built in spell checker?

Kona: Good point. Again, we'll keep it in mind for upcoming changes. Thanks.

Gaulois: Always good to have you reminding us of our Anglo bias. Point taken.

This is great feedback, everyone. Please keep it coming.
